Tiger's wife gives birth to son _ Charlie Axel

The uncertainty facing Tiger Woods at the start of the year is almost cleared up.
He is practicing at full strength with no restrictions, and playing golf at his home course in Florida. He became a father again when his wife gave birth to a boy on Sunday — Charlie Axel Woods.

The only thing left is when he returns to the PGA Tour.
The first possibility is the Accenture Match Play Championship, where he is the defending champion, which starts Feb. 25.
"I don't know what this affects," tournament director Wade Dunagan said Monday afternoon. "We're hopeful he'll make the Accenture Match Play Championship his first event back. The truth is, I don't know where we stand with that. It's one less obstacle, but he may want to stay home for another week now that the baby is born."

The CA Championship held its media day Monday across the country at Doral, where Woods is a three-time winner. That World Golf Championship starts two weeks after the Accenture, on March 12. Tournament director Eddie Carbone had answers to every question, except whether his All-Star field would include the biggest star in golf.

The tournament showed some of its public service announcements that will run in the Miami area, featuring the likes of Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Camilo Villegas. Woods was not in any of them.
For the moment, Woods has other priorities.

"Elin and I are thrilled to announce the birth of our son, Charlie Axel Woods," Woods wrote in a short statement on his Web site. "Both Charlie and Elin are doing great and we want to thank everyone for their sincere best wishes and kind thoughts. Sam is very excited to be a big sister and we feel truly blessed to have such a wonderful family."
Sam Alexis was born on the Monday after the 2007 U.S. Open, and Woods did not play for three weeks, even skipping a title defense the week before he returned at the Buick Open.

But he is not new to fatherhood any more. And even with a son, if Woods follows his own father's routine, it still will be another six months before he puts Charlie in a high chair to watch him swing a golf club.

"We look forward to introducing Charlie to you at the appropriate time," Woods wrote.
Woods likely won't be available to comment until he shows up at a tournament, so the significance of his son's name was not clear. His daughter's name — Sam — was the pet name that Earl Woods called a young Tiger.

Woods has great respect for Charlie Sifford, the first black to become a PGA Tour member; Sifford playfully refers to Woods as "my grandson." Axel is a Swedish name that means "father of peace," according to the Web site birthcare.com (his wife is Swedish).
But the big question remains the left knee.
"I'm full-bore with my practice sessions and have no restrictions," Woods said in a newsletter last week. "It's just a matter of getting my golf endurance up. I don't have my golf stamina back yet."
The date of birth is significant only because Woods always to seems to celebrate on Sunday of the Buick Invitational, where he was the four-time defending champion.

Woods also won the U.S. Open last summer at Torrey Pines for his 14th career major, but that was the last time anyone saw him play. He had reconstructive surgery on his left knee a week later, ending his season.
Since then, Padraig Harrington won two majors, the Americans won the Ryder Cup, Woods' wife became pregnant, the economy went in the tank, Barack Obama was elected president and the Arizona Cardinals reached the Super Bowl.
Woods said last week that his return depends largely on the birth of his child, which "takes precedent over anything I do golf-wise."

"But I must admit, I am also excited about returning to competition," he said. "Early on, I didn't miss golf because I enjoyed staying home with Elin and Sam and I knew I wasn't physically able to play. The truth is, I would have embarrassed myself. Now, I'm getting my feel and practice back. It's just a matter of playing more on the course."
Now, it's a matter of which course.

Feb. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Tiger Woods said he’s looking forward to returning to the U.S. PGA Tour, the birth of his second child and a round of golf with U.S. President Barack Obama.

Woods, who hasn’t played competitive golf since undergoing knee surgery in June, said on his Web site that he’s going “full-bore” in practice sessions with coach Hank Haney at Isleworth Country Club near his home in Orlando, Florida.

Woods, 33, hasn’t said when he might return to action and that his comeback is dependent on building stamina and when his wife Elin gives birth to the couple’s second child, which is due this month. The Masters, the first major tournament of the season, is scheduled for April 9-12 in Augusta, Georgia.

“A lot depends on the baby, which is due pretty soon,” Woods, the world’s No. 1 golfer, said in his newsletter. “That takes precedent over anything I do golf-wise.”

Woods, who in October said he was “very confident” about playing at the Masters, is getting excited about returning.

“Early on, I didn’t miss golf because I enjoyed staying home with Elin and (daughter) Sam, and I knew I wasn’t physically able to play,” Woods said. “The truth is, I would have embarrassed myself. Now, I’m getting my feel and practice back. It’s just a matter of playing more on the course.”

No Torrey Pines

Woods said he’s disappointed about missing this week’s Buick Invitational, where he’s the four-time defending champion. The tournament is being played at Torrey Pines in San Diego, where he won last year’s U.S. Open in a playoff against Rocco Mediate a week before having surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

“I’ve always loved playing there and wish I could compete, but I can’t,” said Woods, who added that he’ll probably watch some of the tournament on television.

Woods also said that he was honored to speak at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on Jan. 18 as part of the ceremonies leading up to Obama’s Presidential inauguration. He said that while Obama has a busy schedule, the two agreed to get together at some point for a round of golf.

“We didn’t get to talk much,” Woods said. “I didn’t want to get in his way. I did ask him if he wanted to play golf and he said, ‘I’d love to.’ So we’ll make it happen.”

As for his own schedule, Woods remains uncertain.

“The perfect scenario is I come back without a hitch and play a full schedule,” said Woods, who took part in 16 PGA Tour events in 2007 and 15 in 2006. “At this point, especially with the baby coming, I’m taking it tournament to tournament. With our new addition, it’s going to be a hectic spring.”

Montgomerie picked as Europe Ryder Cup captain

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Just call him Captain Monty.

"It's not just an honor but a huge responsibility as well" Colin Montgomerie said Wednesday after being chosen to captain Europe's team for next year's Ryder Cup in Wales. "It is important we do everything we can to claim back the Ryder Cup in Wales in 2010."

Montgomerie is Europe's second most successful Ryder Cup player behind Nick Faldo with 20 wins, nine losses and seven halves for 23 1/2 points. He was picked over Jose Maria Olazabal, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam.

Montgomerie has played on eight Ryder Cup teams, winning five times. He was left off the team that lost to the United States last year at Valhalla.

"It became very obvious in the discussions in Abu Dhabi that we wanted the right man for 2010 and as that meeting progressed Colin's name came more and more into the frame," said Thomas Bjorn, the chairman of the Ryder Cup tournament committee. "At one stage we thought about naming two captains but we felt that we should concentrate on one captain at a time."

Montgomerie will be 47 when the competition starts at Celtic Manor in September 2010, making him Europe’s youngest captain.

The United States has already chosen Corey Pavin as its captain. He will be 50 at the time.

Montgomerie made his Ryder Cup debut in 1991, and has played alongside greats such as Faldo and Seve Ballesteros.

"I dreamed this opportunity might come my way, but far-off dreams I must admit," Montgomerie said. "We speak here 17, 18 years later and here it is."

Only a few weeks ago, Montgomerie had been hoping to be a part of Europe's team as a player.

"It just seems the time is right for me to take the helm here and be captain," he said. "I will not in any way, shape or form come close to qualifying for the team."

As for the 2012 Ryder Cup, Montgomerie is already hoping he will have a chance to play again.

"I don’t believe I cannot compete in 2012. That is now my aim," Montgomerie said. "But we're concentrating today on 2010 and that's where we are."

Schwarzenegger appears to be in deep financial rough: The AP quotes Scott Pattison, executive director of the National Association of State Budget Officers, as saying that such fees are so "politically difficult and controversial" that it's usually one of the last proposals that's floated.

Groping golfer 'sexually immature', court told

Aspiring professional golfer Leighton Lyle was sexually immature and a virgin when he fondled a woman's breast on a long-haul flight, a court has been told.

Lyle, the brother of Australian US PGA tour player Jarrod Lyle, fears his own golf ambitions could be ruined if he is convicted.

The 2007 Victorian amateur champion has admitted indecently touching the woman seated next to him while she slept during a Los Angeles to Melbourne flight in April of that year.

In the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday, Lyle's lawyer Julie Sutherland put his behaviour down to sexual immaturity and said in his dedication to golf, he may have neglected his love life.

"At 24, this young man had never been really going out with anyone. He was a virgin. Perhaps that factored into this offence," she said.

However, Ms Sutherland said Lyle - who recently received his tour card to play professional golf in Australia - could have his hopes of being a professional dashed by a conviction.

"He's going to be punished, in effect, for the rest of his life," she said.

Ms Sutherland said his behaviour was opportunistic and he deserved a bond without conviction, but the crown argued a conviction was deserved because the offending was serious.

The court heard Lyle, 25, from Shepparton, was ashamed, embarrassed and sorry for his actions.

Forensic psychiatrist Jeffrey Cummins told the court he was confident Lyle posed a minimal risk of reoffending.

"He should regard this as an opportunity to learn more about socialising with women," he said.

The court heard since the offence Lyle had signed up to internet dating websites and was socialising more.

Lyle, who has pleaded guilty to indecent assault, will be sentenced by Magistrate Charles Rozencwajg on Friday.

KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Geoff Ogilvy finished the final round the way he started Sunday, six shots clear of a winners-only field at the Mercedes-Benz Championship. It was the part in the middle he could have done without.
Ogilvy was on the verge of an unseemly collapse, his six-shot lead down to one as he stood in the ninth fairway, when he drilled his approach onto the green and holed a 30-foot eagle putt to steady his nerves and send him on his way to victory at Kapalua.

With four straight birdies on the back nine to restore the margin, he sailed home to a 5-under 68 to join Ernie Els and Vijay Singh as the only wire-to-wire winners since the season-opening PGA Tour event moved to Kapalua in 1999. Anthony Kim nearly made double eagle on the last hole for a 67 to tie for second with Davis Love III, who also had a 67.

It was the fifth PGA Tour victory for Ogilvy, adding to his U.S. Open title in 2006 and a pair of World Golf Championships. He finished at 24-under 268, earned $1.12 million and moved up to No. 6 in the world. "When Geoff plays well, it never looks like he's going to hit a bad shot," Adam Scott said. But there were a few too many on the front nine, which was no walk on the beach.

Ogilvy had made only one bogey in the first three rounds, but doubled that count after this first two holes Sunday.
With the Plantation course soft from overnight rain that lasted into the morning, Ogilvy missed the fairway to the right on the opening hole and couldn't reach the green, missing an 18-foot par putt. He found a bunker with his tee shot on the second hole, blasted out to about 6 feet and missed that putt.

Just like that, his lead was down to three shots over Kim, who birdied two of the opening three holes. And even after Ogilvy appeared to steady himself with an up-and-down birdie on the par-5 fifth, followed by another good pitch to 5 feet for birdie on the sixth, he was grinding. He hit the wrong club on the seventh, came up short and took bogey. Then he missed his target some 20 yards to the right on the par-3 eighth and took another bogey.

"I've never had a six-shot lead before. It's a pretty uncomfortable feeling, to be honest with you," Ogilvy said. "I got to the green and saw I had a one-shot lead -- I figured it was mostly gone -- and it felt like a normal tournament again. I just told myself, 'It's a great spot to be after 63 holes, get on with it." And he did.

After watching Kim make another birdie to go out in 32, Ogilvy hit 3-iron to the front edge of the green and rolled in the eagle putt. That put his lead back to three, and he didn't come close to dropping another shot the rest of the round.
"From then on, I was a different person," Ogilvy said. "I played almost the best I had all week the next six holes. It was the right time for a great shot, and I happened to make the putt, which was a big bonus."

Singh (2007) and Els (2003) were tied for the lead after the first round when they went wire-to-wire. Ogilvy took the outright lead on the 14th hole of the opening round and never trailed over the final 58 holes of the tournament. Love, who only qualified for the Mercedes by winning the last tournament of the season at Disney, got up-and-down from the rough right of the 18th green for birdie to tie for second. His tie for second should move him up to about No. 55 in the world ranking, important as he tries to qualify for the Masters.

Justin Leonard went 50 holes without a bogey until dropping a shot on the 13th hole. He shot 70 to finish fifth. All of them were playing for second on the back after Ogilvy rediscovered his swing and his focus with the eagle on the par-5 ninth. The 31-year-old Australian followed that with a 20-foot birdie on the 10th, the took advantage of the easy holes with birdies.
Starting on No. 12, where he hit wedge into 5 feet, Ogilvy made four straight birdies inside 8 feet, and played conservatively on the last few holes. It was a scenic and peaceful walk as he walked downhill the last two holes toward victory, the Pacific on the horizon and the sun making Molokai appear closer than the 10 miles across the Pailolo Channel.

Asia Wins Royal Trophy

Asian captain Joe Ozaki summed up the mood of an entire continent after his team swept to a memorable 10-6 Royal Trophy win over Europe by describing it as "a dream come true".

Ozaki admitted his first taste of captaincy in 2007 was more of a nightmare as Europe powered to a nine point victory - but it was his determination not to suffer a repeat of that agony which proved the perfect motivation for him and his players.

Ozaki beamed: "Before I flew into Thailand, I had a strong intention in my mind. Asia had lost the first two matches and I really wanted to win this time.

"I think all my team members felt what I was thinking and I think they realised how I wanted them to play - aggressively and with great self-confidence. I could not be more proud of the way the did that."

There was never any danger of Asia relaxing the stranglehold they had exerted by winning both the Foursomes and Fourballs in emphatic fashion, to take an imposing 6 1/2 - 1 1/2 lead into Sunday's singles.

That meant they needed just two points from the eight remaining matches, and Ozaki felt his team's belief that the job was as good as done was one of the main reasons the European team shaded the final session 4 1/2 - 3 1/2.

He explained: "Everyone knew that we needed only two points to win the Royal Trophy and everyone was watching the leaderboard. It was a tough situation for everyone to focus on their own game."

It was even more difficult for the Asian players not to start celebrating early as Prayad Marksaeng and Toru Taniguchi effectively wrapped up those two points by charging into big leads on the front
nine in their matches.

Prayad eventually crushed Pablo Larrazabal 5&4, while Taniguchi had the honour or holing the winning putt as he overwhelmed Niclas Fasth 7&6 - a record margin for the Royal Trophy.

European captain Jose Maria Olazabal conceded: "We went out trying to get the points on the board early to try and change then momentum of the match and we almost achieved that - almost, but not quite.

"S?ren Hansen almost won the first match but they tied on 18, then Paul Lawrie won his match, followed by Nick Dougherty.

"The only problem today was that two of the matches were really down, like five or six holes, and that was a bit of a problem for everybody.

"But we didn’t have much choice to be honest: we had to go out there and try to win as many points as possible and the guys went out and tried hard. I want to thank them for doing that. But it was very difficult to come back from such a big deficit.

"This is a great event and we have to learn our lesson from this week. The Asian team has raised the bar and we are going to have come back angrier and more determined if possible to really beat these guys."

Asia's victory was a personal triumph for their Captain, whose bubbly personality has been a joyous feature of the competition.

His players threatened to throw him into the water if they won, while he responded by announcing he felt like dancing as they took the honours on the first two days.

The all-swimming, all-dancing Asian captain added: "I'm glad the players did not throw me in. The water was too shallow. I was lucky.

"I was upset with the players for suggesting it, as it was dangerous to throw me in there ! I didn't think they would do it, because everyone just wanted to hug each other and shake each other's hands.

"I was especially proud of my players for playing so well in the doubles, the Foursomes and the Fourballs, where Europe has always been so strong.

"But our teamwork was great, and I knew we would win because of that. I would have been too sad if we had lost. This win means a lot to me."

It will also mean a great deal in terms of putting the Royal Trophy even more firmly on the golfing map, and showing that Asian golfers can compete with the best players in the world without feeling they have something to prove.

And they introduced 17 year old Japanese sensation Ryo Ishikawa to a wider audience, which guarantees there will be even more focus on Asian golf over the coming years.

The Bangkok crowds had even more to celebrate as Thai golfers Prayad and Thongchai Jaidee emerged as the only men to clinch maximum points.

They combined to win their Foursomes and Fourball matches, and Thongchai matched Prayad's singles success, rubbing salt into Paul McGinley's wounds from his first defeat in six appearances for Europe by beating the Irishman 5&4.

Thongchai commented: "We knew what was going on in the other matches and we were motivated and it turned out to be a successful day, one we will all remember with great fondness.

Unlike Golf Tips Mag, the Golf Channel is not into sharing, which is a shame and probably why Jack and Arnie never really got along. Daly's Suspended

Wayward golf star John Daly is welcome back in Australia, despite being suspended from his home US PGA Tour.

Daly said on Wednesday he had been suspended for six months by the PGA Tour for conduct that brought unwelcome publicity.

The tour does not discuss disciplinary action against its players and Daly says he is unsure when his suspension began but hopes it ends in May.

That would mean he played in Australia's three major tournaments recently while banned from the US circuit.

However, that does not appear to have been an issue for Australasian PGA Tour officials and Australian Masters promoter David Rollo of IMG said he would be happy for the American to return.

"Our experiences with him on the Masters were entirely positive. He was a pleasure to deal with so, if the circumstances were right again, we'd certainly look at giving him an invitation back," Rollo said.

Daly played the Masters, Australian PGA and Australian Open with the only controversy coming when he snatched a fan's camera - cameras are not permitted in the crowd - and hurled it against a tree.

Rollo said that the US Tour had contacted Australasian Tour director of tournaments Andrew Langford-Jones and asked for a report on Daly's behaviour during the Masters at Huntingdale.

"It was exemplary in terms of everything we ever asked him to do in terms of media conferences and so on. He was outstanding and Andrew fed that back in," Rollo said.

"He is a decent individual, there's no question in my mind about that and hopefully he gets his game back to where it should be."

Daly said he revealed his suspension "to be fair to my fans and tournament organisers" and explain his absence from the tour in the first three months of the season when he typically plays.

He has not played on the PGA Tour since he missed the cut on October 17 in Las Vegas.

Ten days later, police in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, said he appeared intoxicated outside a Hooters restaurant, and he was taken to jail to sleep it off.

It is the second time the former USPGA and British Open champion has been suspended, the 42-year-old describing his latest ban as the lowest point of a wild 18-year career.

Daly, who last won at the Buick Invitational in 2004, has a five-year exemption as a past champion which runs out this year.

He said he would continue playing the European tour, starting with a three-week swing in the United Arab Emirates.

"There's always light with me. Right now, my home tour is probably Europe. And I love the European tour. I always have. But my home is the United States. That's where I would rather play," he said.

Daly said he learned of the suspension after PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem sent a letter to his agent, Bud Martin.

"Tim and his staff have to do what they do," Daly said.

"Truly and honestly, I wish Tim would get to know the facts better before he makes a decision.

"I would love to sit down and have a nice talk with him, tell him what really happened.

"But perception is reality in the world and sometimes they have to do what they have to do."

I've told this story a handful of times in columns and blogs over the past few years, but in the wake of recent events, it's worth recounting once again.

After the United States team had clinched the 2005 Presidents Cup, all dozen players plus captain Jack Nicklaus and assistant Jeff Sluman took their seats on the dais in the tournament interview room. Whether by random coincidence due to how the men had filed into the room or by choice, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were tucked away on the far left, which was only fitting: For once, neither of the world's two most popular golfers was the center of attention.

No, on this day the questions came rolling in for Chris DiMarco, who had holed the winning putt; and Fred Couples, who defeated Vijay Singh in a crucial singles match; and Nicklaus, who seemed to ignite a spark with the players through his laissez-faire approach to leadership. Through it all, hardly any queries were tossed in the directions of Woods and Mickelson -- and that was just fine with them, as the two "heated rivals" whispered and giggled quietly to one another throughout much of the half-hour proceedings.

While their teammates continued discussing the finer points of the victory over the International side, I couldn't help but remain fixated on the two guys in the corner who looked like long-lost BFFs. Afterward, I approached Mickelson and asked what he and Woods were talking about the entire time.

"I could tell you," he said to me, then flashed that famed Cheshire cat grin before adding, "but then I'd have to kill you."
More than three years later, I'd still kill for a blow-by-blow account of their personal conversation. Even without it, though, we should let this serve as an example when discussing their relationship. It may be frosty on the course, they may not be sharing rides in each other's private jets or dinners together off it, but they're not above having a cordial and sometimes even friendly exchange at certain times.

Without this background, it's easy to believe Woods' caddie Steve Williams' recent comments and believe there is some sort of hatred between the players. While speaking at a clinic in front of a few hundred people, the New Zealand native said, "I wouldn't call Mickelson a great player, 'cause I hate the [expletive]," according to The Guardian newspaper of Britain. When asked to clarify the next day, he told the New Zealand-based Star Times, "I don't particularly like the guy. He pays me no respect at all and hence I don't pay him any respect. It's no secret we don't get along either."

For his part, Mickelson took the high road, issuing a statement through his representatives that said, "After seeing Steve Williams' comments all I could think of was how lucky I am to have a class act like Bones [Jim Mackay] on my bag and representing me."

We can take Williams' words in one of two ways: Either he was working alone and -- as the signoffs to those TV editorials often warn -- the views heard here do not necessarily reflect the views of the parent company, or as one of the essential members to the highly guarded Woods cabinet, he was speaking on behalf of the boss.

If Williams was representing the entire Woods camp, the message was severely distorted. On Monday, Woods also issued a statement in which he scolded his caddie for those comments. "I was disappointed to read the comments attributed to Steve Williams about Phil Mickelson, a player that I respect," he said. "It was inappropriate. The matter has been discussed and dealt with." We'll likely hear more from Woods later this week when he holds his annual news conference in advance of his own Chevron World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Just don't expect Woods to echo Williams' sentiments -- ever. The No. 1-ranked player may be even more masterful behind a podium than on a putting green and will certainly do his best to quash any rumors and put the story to rest by issuing similarly carefully chosen words to discuss his -- and Williams' -- relationship with Mickelson without causing any more of a stir.

Perhaps he will mention the oft-talked about games of pingpong that develop between the two players during the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup each season. Or maybe he will relive with a laugh the gift that the Mickelson family sent his daughter Sam Alexis when she was born -- a mini pingpong table.

Of course, for those conspiracy theorists out there who believe the pingpong and pleasantries are mere facades for the public while Woods and Mickelson secretly burn with hatred for each other, I offer up the following response: So what?
In a time when players in team sports switch rosters so often that the line between rival and teammate is constantly blurred, individual sports allow for a much clearer vision of who is and forever will be on your side and who isn't. Golf is a gentleman's game and as such, many players often form bonds with their brethren, becoming close friends with the very people they are competing against. But there is always an egotistical, self-serving bent to those relationships. Sure, a pro would like nothing more than to see his best friend win a tournament … unless, of course, he could win the tournament himself.

Woods and Mickelson will never be confused with best friends -- their interpersonal gigglefest three years ago notwithstanding -- and that's not such a bad thing for the state of the game. In fact, it could make it all that more entertaining, knowing that each player wants to win a given tournament as much as he wants the other to lose. Such emotion instills passion on the course and ensures there will be greater drama between the players when they next tee it up together.
It's hardly a new concept. Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer were fierce rivals a generation ago and though each concedes that he is good friends with the other, they've still never gotten together for that fishing trip that's been discussed for years. More recently, Padraig Harrington noted that while he may not dislike Sergio Garcia, whom he defeated in last year's British Open and this year's PGA Championship, the two men are "complete opposites" and don't exactly pal around off the course.

Woods and Mickelson may not have a rivalry of the hammer-and-the-nail variety, but it's not far off, either. Though the latter owns 34 career PGA Tour victories and three major championship titles in the Woods era, Tiger has lapped his accomplishments time and again, earning 65 wins and 14 majors in the erstwhile Mickelson era. Even now, the rivalry between the players has lost some luster, as Garcia has usurped Mickelson as the world's No. 2-ranked player behind Woods.
No matter how many times Mickelson gushes over the exploits of Woods, no matter how many times Woods downplays his lack of friendship with Mickelson, there will always be a barrier between them. Williams' latest comments will only help to add fuel to the fire, further confirming how much each one wants to beat the other.

And there's nothing wrong with that. It's a whole lot better than watching them whisper and giggle their way around the course like a couple of BFFs.

Tiger Woods' Kiwi caddie doubts his superstar boss will mind him calling his fierce rival Phil Mickelson a "prick".

That's because Steve Williams says it's "no secret" the two leading golfers in the world "don't get along".

If it was a secret, then it certainly isn't now.

Not after Williams' sensational interview with the Star-Times yesterday in the wake of an article that ran in the Guardian. In it he lifted the scab off Woods' festering relationship with Big Phil, offering a withering assessment of Woods' compatriot and one-time Ryder Cup partner while his employer recovers from knee surgery.

Williams was quoted as saying: "I wouldn't call Mickelson a great player 'cause I hate the prick."

When approached by the Star-Times yesterday, Williams confirmed the quote was accurate, although he had not intended that it find its way into the public domain.

"I certainly didn't make it to a media person," he said. "I visit a lot of golf clubs and do a lot of speaking for charity and that is one of the questions I get asked the most: what is Tiger's relationship like with Phil Mickelson.

"I was simply honest and said they don't get a long. You know what it's like. You're at a charity event and you have a bit of fun."

Asked if he used the word "prick", he said "yes" and added a few more choice words to the mix.

"I don't particularly like the guy myself," he said of Mickelson. "He pays me no respect at all and hence I don't pay him any respect. It's no secret we don't get along either."

Williams is an infamously brusque individual who once threw a spectator's camera into a pond. But, even by his standards, this was an astonishing thing to say.

Since scoring a job as Woods' bagman, he has been careful not to create any controversy, partly because Woods sacked his predecessor for his outspokeness.

Williams doubted Woods would react to his comments.

"He knows the media," he said. "You make a comment and they blow it all out of proportion and it's no big deal."

But to make matters worse, the Guardian has reported a story Williams told about this year's US Open at Torrey Pines, where Woods and Mickelson were paired together.

The two players were walking down the 17th fairway when, according to Williams, someone shouted "Phil" in Mickelson's direction. The world No 2 did not respond until the fan shouted, "Hey, Mr Mickelson." When Mickelson turned and waved, the fan yelled out "Nice tits". The crowd erupted in laughter; Mickelson went double bogey, bogey and his chances of winning the tournament disappeared.

Williams confirmed the story was almost accurate, adding it was his recollection the incident happened at Beth Page.

It's not known how Woods and Mickelson will react. But it's safe to assume Mickelson will not appreciate having it aired in public by Woods' bag carrier.

Williams' comments confirm that these are troubled times for those who peddle the image of golf as the most gentlemanly of sports, coming just days after Padraig Harrington revealed the extent of his enmity with Sergio Garcia. "We have nothing in common except golf."

Woods and his caddie not only work together, the golfer acted as Williams' best man at his wedding.

It is safe to assume that Woods would have found the joke at Mickelson's expense as amusing as Williams clearly did.

Whatever the truth, Williams' comments will only add to the anticipation of Woods' return next year, not least for that moment when the two players are next paired together at an event.

SYDNEY, Australia -- John Daly smashed a spectator's camera into a tree while shooting a 6-over 78 in the first round of the Australian Open on Thursday, making it likely he will miss the cut for the third consecutive week Down Under.
After pushing his tee shot wide on the ninth hole -- his last -- Daly walked into a clump of trees, where spectator Brad Clegg tried to take a picture at close range.
Daly snatched the camera and smashed it against the nearest tree, telling the man, "You want it back, I'll buy you a new one."

He later released a statement via tournament organizers saying Clegg got too close. "I was looking to take a drop and a camera was 6 inches away from my face. If I was 10 under, I would have felt the same," Daly said in the brief statement. "My eyes are still burning from the flash of the camera.

"I feel it was very rude to put a camera that close to somebody's face in any situation. The guy that had the camera had already taken a dozen shots at close range." Without saying another word, Daly took his penalty drop, finished the hole with a bogey and stormed off the course immediately after signing his card. Asked if he would seek compensation, Clegg told the Australian Associated Press: "I don't think I'll be chasing him for the money. He's a big bloke!"

Daly, who missed the cut at the Australian Masters and the PGA in the last two weeks and is being paid an appearance fee for his three-tournament trip to Australia, had three double bogeys, three bogeys and four birdies. Clegg said he didn't think he provoked Daly by going so close. "I was bold, but I wasn't unreasonable," Clegg said. Terms and conditions for tickets at the Australian Open prohibit the use of cameras on the course for spectators.

Daly is sensitive about cameras on the course, having required surgery earlier this year to fix a torn muscle in his stomach that he said he injured at the Honda Classic in 2007 when he tried to stop his swing after hearing the click of a fan's camera. Daly is making his first visit to Australia since 2002, when he left in controversial circumstances. After taking a triple-bogey 7 on his last hole at the Australian PGA at Coolum that year, Daly threw his putter and ball into a greenside pond and later failed to sign for a 78 on his scorecard, disqualifying himself from a tournament.

Daly was later fined $5,600 by the Australasian PGA Tour and was ordered to write a letter of apology to a tour official he verbally abused, and to Craig Parry and his other playing partner, Greg Norman. Daly is trying to finish a difficult year on a positive note. He spent a night in jail on Oct. 27 after being found "extremely intoxicated and uncooperative," police said, outside a Hooters restaurant in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Daly hasn't had a PGA Tour card since 2006, when his two-year exemption expired from his last victory at the Buick Invitational in 2004. He made only five cuts in 17 starts on the PGA Tour this year and earned $56,000.
His only bright spot in the past month was a final-round 62 at the Hong Kong Open en route to a 17th-place tie.

Pavin Ryder Cup Captain

NEW YORK -- Corey Pavin's hand was shaking so badly that all he could do was drop the ball and hope it stayed on the tee. It was his first Ryder Cup overseas, and he had the opening tee shot at The Belfry. Pavin composed himself and won three matches to help the United States to victory in 1993. That was the last time the Americans won the Ryder Cup in Europe, and the last time they successfully defended the cup.

Now the pressure is on Pavin to repeat those feats -- this time as a captain. "The nerves you feel at the Ryder Cup are nothing like you feel anywhere else in golf," Pavin said Thursday as he was introduced as captain at a news conference. "I've won the U.S. Open -- it felt like a walk in the park compared to the Ryder Cup." Pavin, who has 15 PGA Tour victories and won the 1995 U.S. Open, played in three Ryder Cups with an 8-5-0 record. The 49-year-old takes over for Paul Azinger, who helped the U.S. end a decade of European dominance at the Ryder Cup with a 16½-11½ victory in September at Valhalla.

The Americans have not had the same captain in consecutive Ryder Cups since Ben Hogan in 1947 and 1949. U.S. players lobbied for Azinger to return the night of their victory at Valhalla, and only recently has he said he might be interested.
But PGA of America president Jim Remy said the organization didn't want to break with precedent. "We have so many great players who have earned that right to be a Ryder Cup captain that we want to make sure that we support them and hopefully not leave any great player behind," he said. The 2010 Ryder Cup will be played at Celtic Manor in Wales. Pavin served as an assistant to captain Tom Lehman in 2006. He said it was too early to discuss whether additional changes would be made to the selection system. Azinger was responsible for modernizing the system to account for the influx of international players on the PGA Tour. He based points on money and doubled the captain's picks to four out of the 12 spots.

Pavin joked that he wanted 12 captain's picks. That's not happening, but he indicated he would prefer more than four.
"Maybe between four and 12 somewhere," he said. Pavin made his Ryder Cup debut in 1991 at Kiawah Island. The Americans won that year, then retained the cup two years later. He went 4-1 in a U.S. loss in 1995 at Oak Hill in his final appearance.
Pavin doesn't expect his new role to reduce his playing schedule next year. He'll use those tournaments to scout out his possible roster. "Every player has his own personality, and every player needs to be treated accordingly," Pavin said. "So a lot of what I will be doing the next couple years is identifying what type of personalities each potential player for the Ryder Cup team would be and developing plans on how to talk with that person, how to motivate them, how to encourage them."
Pavin could enjoy the enviable task of trying to decide where to play a healthy Tiger Woods in 2010. He spent a lot of time with Woods in his role as an assistant in 2006.

But even Woods has never been on a winning Ryder Cup team in Europe, where the Americans have lost the last three.
"When you're part of your crowd cheering for you, it's quite easy to just relax and play," Pavin said. "But when [they're] cheering for the other team for the most part, it's a different mindset, and that's going to be a very important factor of what I talk to the players about. That's an issue that it's tough to get used to, but you can flip that around as a positive for our team."

DETROIT – General Motors is bailing out on Tiger Woods.

Woods, a global icon in sports with his 14 major championships, has been carrying the Buick logo on
his golf bag for the last nine years and still had one year left on his contract.

But General Motors Corp. was looking to cut costs and hoard cash while trying to survive the worst
sales downturn in a quarter-century. And it said Monday the world’s No. 1 golfer wanted more time
for himself, especially with a second child on the way.

“Timing is everything,” said Larry Peck, golf marketing manager for Buick. “We’ve had such a great
partnership with Tiger. It’s hard for us to walk away from that. But this frees up time for him. And it
sure frees up a lot of money for us.”

The endorsement deal, believed to be worth at least $7 million a year, was to expire at the end of
2009.

Woods has endorsed GM products around the world and mainly has been seen in Buick commercials
as the company tried to give the nameplate a more youthful image. Peck said during the launch a few
years ago of the Enclave that its research showed 78 percent of consumers who bought the SUV
previously had not been Buick owners.

“We attribute awareness of our product to Tiger,” he said.

Buick’s U.S. sales have dropped 54 percent from 2000, the first full year Woods worked with GM, to
2007, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank. The brand’s global sales, however, rose 17 percent during
The average age of the brand’s buyers also dropped. Around 2001, the average age was in the low
70s, but it has since fallen to 66 for Buick sedans and 53 for the Enclave.

GM has been making dramatic cuts in advertising as it tries to conserve cash. The nation’s largest
automaker spent nearly $7 billion more than it took in last quarter and has warned that without federal
help, it may reach the minimum amount of cash required to run the company by the end of the year.

Mark LaNeve, GM’s vice president for North American marketing, said GM and Woods started
discussing an end to the deal earlier this year, and it had nothing to do with the Detroit Three
automakers’ quest for $25 billion in federal loans.

But GM’s statement said the decision was made as part of “the search for budget efficiencies during a
difficult economy for General Motors.”

Woods’ agent at IMG, Mark Steinberg, said the decision to end the relationship one year early was
“absolutely mutual.”

“It was a combination of things,” Steinberg said. “Tiger was looking to gain some more time, and
certainly it was an opportunity for GM to reduce its spending with everything going on.”

Buick said last week that it would be cutting back on its deal providing courtesy cars at PGA Tour
events.

GM is so concerned about costs that it cut advertising during the 2009 Super Bowl, although it still
plans to sponsor the NFL and likely air ads before and after the game. GM also has pulled out of the
Oscars and Emmy Awards in 2009— the first time in more than a decade it is not running ads right
before, during or after the two events.

U.S. automakers, the single largest category of advertisers, cut their ad spending 18 percent to $1.37
billion in the second quarter compared with the same period in 2007, according to TNS Media
Intelligence in New York.

Foreign automakers also are trimming their spending on advertising in U.S. markets, with a 5.4
percent cut in the second quarter, for an overall 11 percent drop in U.S. auto ad spending to $3.27
billion, the 12th quarterly dip in a row.

Woods has carried only two logos on his bag since he turned pro in August 1996. He was with Titleist
through 1999 until Buick won a bidding war for its brand on a bag that gets more television time at
tournaments than any other golfer.

Woods has not played since season-ending knee surgery after winning the U.S. Open, and he is not
expected to return until next year, most likely in early March, depending on his recovery.

Steinberg said he would “expect there to be some exposure on the bag” when Woods next plays.

“I’ve got a few ideas, and we’re in the process of working through that,” he said.

Buick remains the title sponsor of two PGA Tour events – the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines,
which Woods has won six times, and the Buick Open outside Detroit, which Woods has won twice.

Poults Driver Knicked

SINGAPORE -- British Open runner-up Ian Poulter pulled out of the Singapore Open after being unable to replace the driver that was stolen at the HSBC Champions Tournament in Shanghai, which ended on Monday.
"I am really gutted," he said Wednesday. "I have been thinking about it for four hours and I have decided to withdraw because my new driver will not arrive on time. "It is disappointing because I did not come all this way not to play. But with so many world ranking points at stake, if I played badly [by using a different driver], I may have lost ground."

The Cobra driver, which he had used in this year's Ryder Cup at Valhalla, was snatched from his bag Saturday at the Sheshan Golf Club. Poulter, ranked No. 25 in the world, offered a reward for the club's return, and signs were posted around the club. A building camera caught an image of the robber, but he was not able to be identified. "I'm absolutely distraught about it as I had spent months testing drivers till I found the right one," Poulter said. "Although I keep two spares, one in America and one in Europe, they just don't feel the same."

The Singapore Open starts on Thursday, but Poulter was told by the manufacturer that a replacement would not have been ready until Friday. India's Anirban Lahiri will take Poulter's place in the field for the $5 million event at Sentosa Golf Club, the richest national open on the Asian Tour. AK Joins Euro's

SOTOGRANDE, Spain -- Anthony Kim has joined the European Tour, the latest of a half-dozen U.S. tour players who have decided to take up joint membership in Europe for the 2009 season.

Kim, a 23-year-old American whose two PGA Tour victories propelled him to No. 8 in the world ranking, paid the $3,280 membership fee that makes him eligible for the season-ending $10 million "Race to Dubai" for the top 60 players and the additional $10 million bonus pool.

He is scheduled to play the Nov. 6-9 HSBC Champions in Shanghai.
Camilo Villegas of Colombia, who won the final two playoff events in the FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour, also paid his dues to become a European Tour member. Also expected to join is Phil Mickelson; former U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy previously said he would join.

"Anytime you get players from the caliber of Camilo and Anthony into the tour, it's great. It's an asset, it's good for golf, it's good for the European Tour," Sergio Garcia said.

Garcia said he expects several other PGA Tour players to seize on the opportunities overseas. Appearance money is offered at some European Tour events, while the practice is banned on the PGA Tour.

"Some of the tournaments we play in the Middle East ... are bigger than the ones they play in the U.S. You get good players there, so world rankings points increase," Garcia said. "At the end of the day, that's what the big players do it for."
During the past six months, Kim has emerged as one of golf's brightest young prospects with victories in the Wachovia Championship and AT&T National at Congressional, along with a starring role in the American victory at the Ryder Cup.
Villegas, 26, is No. 7 after his victories in the BMW Championship in St. Louis and the Tour Championship.
"If you want the tour to grow and get to the level that it deserves, there's no doubt that you need those big players," Garcia said from the Volvo Masters.

If Mickelson decides to join, Europe can claim nine of the top 10 players in the world as members. The exception is Tiger Woods, the No. 1 player in golf, who has said his schedule would not permit him to meet the minimum requirements.
European members must play 12 times, including six tournaments in America -- three majors and three World Golf Championships.

Drunken Daly detained after Hooters incident - 10/29/2008

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Golfer John Daly was taken into custody Sunday morning by Winston-Salem police after he was found drunk outside an area Hooters restaurant.

Police said in a statement Wednesday that said officers went to the restaurant on a medical call.

When they arrived, Daly was being treated by emergency workers after losing consciousness.

While at the restaurant, police said Daly “appeared extremely intoxicated and uncooperative,” refused repeatedly to be taken to the hospital and was asked to leave the restaurant by several workers.

Daly was taken to the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center for a 24-hour stay, until he was sober.

Daly Done and Out?

The two-time major champion told The Associated Press on Thursday that he's considering all of his options for 2009, including playing regularly on the European tour. "I know in Europe there are still a million opportunities to play," Daly said. "It's a great tour. Guys on that tour have shown themselves and proved themselves to be great players." Daly's play, however, has been far from great. The 42-year-old Daly has made just five cuts in 16 events this year, bringing in just $56,017. His best finish was a tie for 40th at the Viking Classic and he plummeted to No. 737 in the world ranking. He hasn't had a top 10 in three years and his erratic behavior has cost him some of the support that made him one of the sport's most popular players.

Daly blames some of his struggles on a mysterious rib injury that forced him to shorten his iconic swing and rendered one of the tour's biggest hitters punchless. "I saw guys hitting it by me that never hit it by me before," said Daly, 16th in driving distance this year. "I was like, there's definitely something wrong here." Daly had surgery over the summer to deal with a cyst the size of a golf ball in his ribs. He says doctors found two small fractures deep in the rib that prevented him from gripping it and ripping it.

He's feeling better, but the recovery process has been slow. Yet he says he still has the itch to play. "It was so long when I was hurt, shooting 71s to 75s and it was a matter of just one hole," he said. "Now I feel like it's all starting to come together. I'd love to play four or five weeks in a row like I used to do. I can't do that because I'm not exempt." Daly will have to rely on the kindness of strangers to get his career back on track. He hopes to land a handful of sponsors exemptions to get into a few early PGA Tour stops next year. If he does that, he thinks he can play well enough to make some money and play his way back onto the tour.

"I hope the tournament organizers that gave me exemptions last couple years when I was hurt see that and let me try it again," he said. One definite stop next year will be Turnberry, site of the 2009 British Open. And he doesn't plan on going alone. Daly is auctioning the opportunity to join him in an effort to raise money for St. Jude's Children Hospital and the autism education program at Western Kentucky University's Clinical Education Complex.

The trip for three will include private jet to the tournament, the chance to play 18 holes at a local course with Daly, accommodations at Daly's villa and four passes to the clubhouse during the tournament. While there'll be plenty of cookouts, Daly says don't expect a trip to the pub or the local sports book. "They will get an idea of how hard it is what we do and they'll understand things people read and hear about John Daly aren't always true," he said.

Maybe, but some things are. Even as he approaches his mid-40s he admits he's still hardly in peak physical condition. He'll never be a workout fiend, though he says he is watching his weight a little more closely. And he's still playing golf, but doing it the Daly way. He spent last week in Missouri hosting a celebrity golf benefit and is scheduled to make an appearance in Bowling Green, Ky., later this month at a charity golf tournament hosted by country musician Steve Azar.

After that he'll probably head to Australia or Asia and try to hone his game before the 2009 season begins. If there's a tee and an invitation, he'll probably take it. "I've always got a place to play," he said. "That's what I need to do is play.

Singh Takes The Money and Runs

World No. 3 Vijay Singh is expected to be sidelined for at least two months because of an arm injury.

Tendinitis in Singh's left forearm has ruled him out of the Iskandar Johor Open in Malaysia from Oct. 30-Nov. 2 and the Champions Tournament in Shanghai from Nov. 6-9.

"I am very disappointed to miss the Iskandar Johor Open and the HSBC event as I was looking forward to returning to Asia," the 45-year-old Singh said in a news release issued by the Asian Tour on Tuesday.

"As disappointing as it will be to miss the tournaments it is important I follow my doctor's instructions and do what is best for my long-term health."

Singh, of Fiji, has won three times on the PGA Tour this year, including the Barclays Classic in August and this month's Deutsche Bank Championship which helped him clinch victory in the FedExCup playoff series.

"We are obviously very disappointed but I understand from his manager that his injury is serious and will need two months of rest," said Iskandar Johor Open organizing committee chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

JACKSON, Miss. -- An attorney for John Daly's estranged wife, Sherrie Daly, says she did not steal the pro golfer's cell phone.

Randy Fishman said Monday that "this is a divorce case and people accuse each other of stuff all the time."

Sherrie Daly was freed on a $500 bond Friday after being accused of stealing the phone from the golfer's tour bus in June. The bus was parked behind the John Daly Bar & Grill in the north Mississippi city of Olive Branch.

Fishman says he expects nothing to come of the misdemeanor charge of petit larceny. A court date is set for October 9.

Azinger Won't Be Captain Again

Paul Azinger has been hailed far and wide for being a key cog (if not the main reason) the Americans earned a victory at the 37th Ryder Cup. So should he get a second shot in the captain's chair, assuming he even wants the job?
History tells us no one in nearly 60 years has had a repeat performance as captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, but the PGA of America drastically changed its system for Azinger, so breaking precedent isn't out of the question.
Our experts ponder Azinger's future as they share their opinions in this week's edition of Fact or Fiction.

FACT OR FICTION?
Paul Azinger should be named the U.S. Ryder Cup captain for the 2010 matches.

Why not? The PGA of America adjusted its thinking when it first approached Paul Azinger two years ago, granting his wish for a new selection process and more captain's selections. For the first time in nine years, the United State was victorious. Why not stick with a winning formula?

Azinger brought a nice energy to the captaincy, and he had an interesting plan, one that grouped his players in three separate foursomes from which he determined he would not deviate. Those groups of players practiced together, and were never going to be broken up. The plan worked, and it might work again in Wales in 2010.

There are roadblocks to this, of course. Azinger simply might want to get on with his life. The PGA of America has not had a player captain the team a second time since Jack Nicklaus in 1987, and back then, he did not do it twice in a row. And there are other deserving candidates, including players such as Corey Pavin and Davis Love III who have been mentioned for future captaincy positions.

Still, if Azinger wants to try again, why not?

Azinger did a masterful job as the captain of this year's U.S. Ryder Cup team. Every move he made -- from the restructured points system to Valhalla's course setup to his four captain's picks to his three team-within-a-team foursomes -- worked to perfection, as the guys in red, white and blue took home their first victory since 1999.
And that's exactly why he should quit while he's ahead.

When asked about such a prospect just hours after his team clinched Sunday, Azinger rolled his eyes while players such as Phil Mickelson and Justin Leonard led an abbreviated chant of, "Zinger in '10! 'Zinger in '10!" But the captain knows that's not how these things work. No U.S. skipper has gone back-to-back since Ben Hogan in 1947-49 -- and the job didn't entail nearly as much back then.

But this isn't just about history. It's about starting anew, letting another underdog have his day, building on the victory but not trying to recreate it. There's a reason why presidents are limited to two terms and it's the same concept for Ryder Cup captains. Unlimited absolute power can be a dangerous thing.

Besides, look at it from Azinger's point of view: He's a conquering hero, the first winning captain since Ben Crenshaw. Why mess with success? Even if the PGA of America knocks twice, he should turn 'em down, continuing to bask in the glory of this one while providing insight for Corey Pavin or Mark O'Meara or Davis Love III or whomever does take over in 2010.

There are two questions that need to be answered here. The first -- should Paul Azinger return to the U.S. captaincy in 2010 -- must be met with a resounding affirmative vote. Not only did Azinger lead the U.S. team to victory at Valhalla, he spent the last two years tweaking the selection system, thus making sure his players would be the ones the most well-prepared for the event.

Azinger also saw to it that he would get the most of those players once the tournament began by virtue of his much-discussed pod system. It's hard to argue that he wasn't the best U.S. captain of the last generation and should he want the job, he should be given the opportunity to come back.

The second question, however, is more important. Does Azinger want to come back? I think it's too early for him to answer this question, but remember that he spent the better part of the last two years working on his captaincy, making more trips to Kentucky than Kenny Perry.

The next Ryder Cup is in Wales. As the road team, he wouldn't be required to spend as much time at that site as he did in the build-up to Valhalla, but the travel burden on the U.S. captain has increased dramatically in the last several years and you have to wonder if Azinger wants to go through that again.

Yes, he should return as captain, but let Azinger make the decision.

Not only did Zinger win for the first time since 1999, he brought energy to the American side -- something that has been missing for a lot longer than that. Paul seems to have a real feel for his players and he seemed to be able to convey to them that one of the reasons the Europeans have done so well in the Ryder Cup is because they embrace the atmosphere instead of wasting energy complaining about it.

But here is my condition: Bring back both Azinger and Faldo as captains. Part of what made Valhalla an unqualified success is the fact there is real chemistry -- and competition -- between those two guys.

The fact the U.S. team will being going to Wales in 2010 in possession of the Cup will make the atmosphere intense. But to be able to bill it as a rematch between Paul the Yank and Our Nick would really amp up the atmosphere. Adding to the intensity will be how much it will tick off the British media to invite Faldo back. That's worth the price of admission alone.

US Hammer Faldo's Euros

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- As darkness descended upon Valhalla Golf Club, the smell of victory still hung in the air. Hours earlier, the victorious U.S. Ryder Cup team celebrated in earnest, a champagne shower dousing the putting green and leaving an aroma that was hard to miss.
Fifteen years ago, just months after his greatest triumph in the game, Paul Azinger would have had difficulty noticing. Cancer treatments robbed him of his senses, and the last thing he'd want is to have much to do with alcohol, anyway.
It sure was a different scene Sunday as the U.S. Ryder Cup captain led the cheers. He managed to push all the right buttons, make all the right moves, do all the right things to assure an American victory for the first time in nine years.
Golf is an individual game, but it is hard to think of an American player or captain who embraced the concept of team golf and the Ryder Cup more than Azinger.
"He put a lot into this, his heart and soul," said Azinger's wife, Toni amid the celebrating Americans. "It is something that he really thought about and worked on. If you ask me, it's his biggest accomplishment."
That's saying something given Azinger's unlikely rise through the game, from a skinny junior college golfer who had difficulty breaking 80 on consecutive days to making the PGA Tour, winning four times in 1987 and then capping his career with a 1993 playoff victory over Greg Norman at the PGA Championship.

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger celebrated the American's victory by spraying anyone in sight with champagne.
Azinger, 48, was just 33 at the time of his major victory, with seemingly more wins to come. But an aching shoulder led to tests and a cancer diagnosis. Azinger lost all his hair via chemotherapy, and although he did return to win one more time and make one more Ryder Cup team (his fourth overall as a player,) his game was never the same.
Perhaps that is why this Ryder Cup meant so much to him. It didn't hurt to have England's Nick Faldo, who denied Azinger the 1987 British Open and would be a Ryder Cup foil several times, as the opposing captain. And it certainly didn't hurt that Azinger is a competitive cuss who doesn't like to lose, is fiercely loyal to his country and wanted America to claim the Ryder Cup again.
"This is bigger to me than anything I've ever been a part of," Azinger said. "I just can't tell you ... it was the plan coming together and the guys embracing it."
There is a fine line between winning and losing the Ryder Cup, and Sunday's 16½-11½ outcome is not nearly as lopsided as the five-point victory would suggest. A few putts here or there, and the final matches that were rendered meaningless when Jim Furyk clinched the Cup with his victory over Miguel Angel Jimenez might have made things really interesting.
These biennial matches are always about the players and how they perform, as Faldo would surely attest. He got exactly zero victories out of his most-heralded players -- Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington and Lee Westwood.
But captains face criticism when they lose so Azinger should be applauded for some for some of the changes he brought to the 37th Ryder Cup. Much was made of the new selection process (shortened mostly to one year), and getting himself four at-large selections instead of the traditional two to allow him more flexibility.
Then there was the flip-flopping of formats, switching to alternate shot on Friday morning instead of best-ball, the latter of which had seen the U.S. fall behind in each of the last three defeats.
"It looks like a good move now, doesn't it," Azinger said after winning the morning session on Friday for the first time since 1991. "It wasn't so much that we play better one way or the other. It was just change for the sake of change."
Perhaps the biggest idea Azinger brought to the team was something he had been pondering for years, a theory he had told his assistant captains about more than a year ago, before they were even named to their posts.
He had this plan to divide the team into three groups of four players and have them bond. He put Anthony Kim, Hunter Mahan, Justin Leonard and Phil Mickelson in one group. Then he had Kenny Perry, Boo Weekley, J.B. Holmes and Furyk in another. And finally Stewart Cink, Steve Stricker, Ben Curtis and Chad Campbell in the third.
Those foursomes practiced and played together throughout the week. And it's no coincidence that they went off in that order during Sunday singles.
"We just decided to come together in small groups; that was it," Azinger said. "They were never going to come out of that little group."
Three of Azinger's captain picks -- Holmes, Mahan, Campbell -- won two matches each and suffered just one loss among them. The six rookies combined to go 9-4-8. Azinger found excellent pairings in Mickelson-Kim (1-1-1), Mahan-Leonard (2-0-1) and Weekley-Holmes (1-0-1).
The result? The U.S. has just its second victory in the Ryder Cup since 1993.
Maybe Azinger ought to consider doing this again two years from now in Wales. It is unlikely, given the PGA of America's penchant for moving the position around. The last captain to do the job two separate times was Jack Nicklaus in 1987. And the last time a U.S. captain held the post for back to back Ryder Cups was Ben Hogan in 1947 and 1949.
Still, it's an intriguing idea, especially given all the new ones brought to this U.S. Ryder Cup effort. When asked about it late Sunday night, several of his players chanted "Zinger in '10, Zinger in '10."
And for the first time all week, Azinger was nearly speechless.
"I'm not going to think about it," he said. "I'm just going to stay up all night and party with my boys."
One more time, Azinger had the right answer.

US Captures Cup

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- U.S. captain Paul Azinger sprinted up the stairs to the clubhouse balcony and grabbed the biggest bottle of champagne he could find to join an American celebration he felt was a long time coming in the Ryder Cup.
They didn't need a miracle putt or an amazing comeback like their last victory in 1999.
They didn't even need Tiger Woods.
Strong as a team and equally mighty on their own, the Americans rode the emotion of a flag-waving crowd and their Kentucky heroes on Sunday to take back the Ryder Cup with a 16½-11½ victory over Europe.

Kenny Perry, a native Kentuckian, said winning the Ryder Cup in his home state made his career.
Kenny Perry, the 48-year-old native son who dreamed of playing a Ryder Cup before a Bluegrass crowd, delivered a 3-and-2 victory that was part of an early push that swung momentum toward the U.S. team.
"I figured this was going to define my career," he said. "But you know what? It made my career."
J.B. Holmes, legendary in these parts for making his high school team in tiny Campbellsville as a third-grader, showed off his awesome power with two final birdies that set up the Americans for victory.
The clinching point, appropriately, came from Jim Furyk.
He felt hollow six years ago at The Belfry as Paul McGinley made a par putt that clinched victory for Europe, the first of three straight victories that extended its domination of a passionate event that Americans once owned.
For all the birdies and spectacular shots over three inspirational days at Valhalla, the Ryder Cup ended with a handshake.
Miguel Angel Jimenez conceded a short par putt, giving Furyk a 2-and-1 victory and the Americans the 14½ points they needed to show they can win on golf's biggest stage -- and without Tiger Woods, out for the year with a knee surgery but staying involved by text messaging Azinger throughout the final day.
This truly was a team effort.
"They just took an everything-to-gain attitude into this competition," Azinger said. "And I couldn't be happier."

Anthony Kim, walking to the first tee Sunday, routed Sergio Garcia 5 and 4 as the Americans tried to finish off the Europeans.
Anthony Kim set the tone by handing Sergio Garcia his worst loss ever in the Ryder Cup and keeping him winless at Valhalla. Boo Weekley galloped off the first tee using his driver as a toy horse, drawing laughter for his antics and cheers for his birdies.
Hunter Mahan, who criticized the Ryder Cup earlier this year as a money-making machine, was the only player to go all five matches without losing at Valhalla. His match was the only one to reach the 18th green, all because of a 60-foot birdie putt from Mahan that slammed into the back of the cup on the 17th hole.
He wound up with a halve against Paul Casey, and a new appreciation for this event.
"It's an incredible, incredible experience," said Mahan, who went 2-0-3 and tied a U.S. record for most points as a captain's pick. "I wish every golfer could experience this, because it's amazing."
Ben Curtis and Chad Campbell, the final player picked for this U.S. team, won the final two matches against Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington for a lopsided score that for the last three years had been posted in European blue.
It was the largest margin of victory for the Americans since 1981.
Despite his misfit collection of stars -- from the backwoods Weekley to the street-smart Kim -- perhaps no one made a greater impact on the U.S. victory than Azinger.
It was his idea to overhaul the qualifying system, which he felt was keeping the Americans from fielding their best team. He also doubled his captain's picks, and those four players produced one-third of the points.
"I poured my heart and soul into this for two years," U.S. captain Paul Azinger said, his voice cracking. "The players poured their heart and soul into this for one week. They deserved it. I couldn't be happier."
European captain Nick Faldo won't get off that easy.
The British press blistered him for benching Garcia and Westwood -- the most successful European tandem -- on Saturday, the first time either of them had ever missed a match in the Ryder Cup. Even more peculiar was putting three of his strongest players at the bottom of the lineup -- Ian Poulter, Westwood and Harrington.
The Ryder Cup was decided as their matches were in progress. Their points never had a chance to matter.
"It always hurts," Faldo said.
Faldo at least was validated by taking Poulter, who had only two top 10s all year. The brash Englishman was the only European to play all five matches and went 4-1, tying the record for most points by a European captain's pick set last time by Westwood.
Even so, there was something missing from this European team.
For years, the team built its reputation by having the most laughs, making the most putts and learning to play together for points. This time, that defined the Americans.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was Europe's best players.
Garcia and Westwood failed to win a match for the first time in the Ryder Cup. Harrington, coming off a summer in which he won the British Open and PGA Championship, now has gone nine consecutive matches without winning. He is 0-7-2 the last two times.
Phil Mickelson had another losing record in the Ryder Cup, winning only one hole in his 3-and-2 loss to Justin Rose. But he spent the first two days showing the ropes to Kim, the youngest player on the U.S. team at 23.
Kim took it from there.
He birdied three of his first four holes and annoyed Garcia -- another turnaround -- by refusing to concede even 2-foot putts and challenging a ruling on the sixth hole. He went 3 up through seven holes, and the scoreboard was filled with red scores belonging to the Americans, who led in eight matches early on the final day.
Europe chipped away, however, until it was clear the Ryder Cup could come down to a big-hitting rookie.
Holmes was all square with Soren Hansen after they traded birdies through the 15th hole and tension began to build. Holmes tugged on his black glove, waggled his driver and hammered a tee shot on the 511-yard 16th that set up a birdie and a 1-up lead.
On the next hole, he sent another powerful drive well to the left, but it bounced up a slope, through the gallery, over a cart path, and kept right on rolling back into the short grass. His wedge spun back to 3 feet to set up the victory.
Azinger, riding around Valhalla in his cart to applaud the crowd and pump them up, jumped off the grassy slope with a look on his face that suggested he had never seen anything like this.
It had been eight long years since the Americans could celebrate like this, and they get two years to enjoy it.

Meeting of the Minds: Faldo, Azinger face the media

They've had some two years to think about their respective strategies for the 37th Ryder Cup, and now only days remain before Nick Faldo and Paul Azinger let everyone know what's been on their minds. The captains of Team USA and Team Europe finally have their 12-man teams in Louisville, but before they turned them loose on Valhalla Golf Club, Faldo and Azinger met with the media on Monday to talk about everything from anticipation to hopes.
JULIUS MASON: Good late afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and thanks for joining us at the Kentucky Exposition Center for this Ryder Cup Captain's news conference. Nick, I would like to welcome you to Louisville, Kentucky, and thank you for joining us today.

Also joining us United States Ryder Cup Captain, Mr. Paul Azinger. I'll turn it over to United States Ryder Cup Captain Paul Azinger for some opening comments.

CAPTAIN PAUL AZINGER: Thank you, Julius, I appreciate it. I want to thank you all for being here. Want to welcome you. I was worried you might get some turbulence from Hurricane Ike but I guess your pilot avoided that, which is good.

You brought a great team over here again. I've been kind of marveling at how well all of you guys have been playing. I know we'll be a little bit of the underdogs going into these matches this week, but hopefully we can rise to the occasion and put on a good show, and I just wanted to say welcome. We've been waiting for this for two years, or more, and I'll turn it over to you.

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: Thanks, Paul, it's great to be here. It's finally here. This day, I've been captain for I think nearly four years or something, 3 1/2 years, and obviously we've been official captains for the last two years, and finally this day has come. A little surreal, when you've been thinking about this day since I guess April, starting to plan for this day and finally it all happens and here we are.

Anyway, we were looking forward to getting settled in and be out on the golf course tomorrow.

Q. Could you gauge for us the mood on the plane on the flight over here, and on a transatlantic flight like that on Ryder Cup week, have you had time to consider your pairings on the plane?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: I've already done that. I spoke to the guys the last two weeks, and I said I've had a couple of weeks now and spoke to a few players, sowed a few seeds, some ideas I've been having, and we talked. Haven't talked pairings, but been working on little scenarios already.

But I'm looking forward to my first team meeting tonight, the first time I've actually got the team all in one place this evening.

The guys are resting. Our Open Champion is a fine sleeper. He had four sleeps, as I would call it. The guys are resting hard. The back of the plane may have been enjoying things a little bit, I'm not too sure, I didn't go down there much. Everybody was in very good spirits.

Q. What were your impressions of the course, I know you got to ride around it today and there's a lot of damage in the area but the course looked pretty good, didn't it?

CAPTAIN PAUL AZINGER: They did a great job cleaning up everything. There was still a lot of evidence of what was going on out there yesterday, 75 mile an hour hurricane wind force, broken limbs and trees, and we had a TV tower go down on the 12th green and they repaired that already. Mark Wilson, the superintendent, knows what he's doing and they have a tremendous crew. They worked really hard. I guess they started last night and they of course knew what they had in store for them this morning. By the time I got out there, the majority of the mess had been cleaned up. So I think the course will be perfect for the tournament.

Q. Curious for both captains, the arrival day, how different is it as a captain and as a player?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: I guess very different. As a player, you make the team, all you've got to do is pack your golf clubs. As a captain, your golf clubs are in your mind this week. Just a lot of thinking. Got to prepare yourselves for team meetings and all sorts of strategy and all sorts of different things, and our daily routine, you have to go through all of that, double check everything.

So yeah, there's a lot going on in your mind. With the players here, they have a very simple goal. They are itching to get out on the golf course and get out and play. That's how I was in my day.

CAPTAIN PAUL AZINGER: Actually I was more nervous as a player coming in trying to figure out the golf course and who I would be playing with and stuff like that I guess.

As a captain, I feel like I've got the lion's share of my work behind me. I don't feel a lot of stress or pressure. I was talking even on the way to the airport, the difference in the butterflies that the players feel versus as a captain, I really don't feel any butterflies. I for the most part know where I'm going, and I've been here a day or two already, so my walk-throughs are over, and I think we're going to be ready.

Q. There was a story in the Chicago Tribune last week that you were thinking about having Lou Holtz talk to your team; is that, in fact, true, and if so, what are you looking for?

CAPTAIN PAUL AZINGER: I'm not really looking for anything. Coach called me up a couple of weeks ago and he loves golf. He's just totally addicted to golf and said he would love to come in and hang out with us one day. He may be hanging with us tomorrow on the course a little bit.

We talked on the phone for a little while, so I think he's a great motivational speaker, but he's also a huge fan of golf. So he's just going to come hang out with us. There's no special speech set aside for Lou Holtz.

Q. You've both played home and away matches; are they different challenges, and is one easier than the other?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: I think they are very similar now. I think back 20 odd years ago when we first came to Muirfield Village, the golf course in that era was very different to what we played in Europe because more players of The European Team played in Europe and now they are international players. It was very much getting used to the conditioning of different style golf courses. The most obvious thing is the crowd support will be a bigger percentage, 25 percent Europeans here to 75 percent I assume will be American fans.

So outside of those two differences, not a great deal of difference.

CAPTAIN PAUL AZINGER: I agree. The European players are very comfortable over here.

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: Better water pressure, as well, is probably the biggest difference. (Laughter).

Q. And did you find one easier than the other, being at home or playing in front of your home crowd?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: No, I don't think so. No, I'm casting my mind back to the '87 one at Muirfield Village when we had 2,000 fans and America had 20,000, and our 2,000 out-sang them and that was an amazing atmosphere. That was the start of the great crowd participation.

Q. By your own admission, you've taken a bit of a bashing from the Irish media recently; but can you give us your thoughts on the two Irish golfers you've got on your team and whether you fancy playing them together? And to Paul, how pleased were you to see Darren Clarke not in Nick's lineup?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: Blimey.

CAPTAIN PAUL AZINGER: All I'll say is that I didn't want to justify why I didn't pick anybody but I would be glad to justify why I picked the guys I did.

So I'm not going to try to justify why Nick didn't pick Darren Clarke. He just brought over 12 I think pretty darned good players, and he had a couple more that he could have chosen. If it was 14 players, I'm pretty sure I know who the other two would be, but it's only 12.

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: The Irish boys are playing well. From two years ago, we have a three-time major winner, who is pretty impressive. And whoever I put the two Irish boys together, it's Monday afternoon, I just walked off a plane.

Q. How important is it for you to sort of generate an awful lot of excitement along the local fans here in the days leading up?

CAPTAIN PAUL AZINGER: I think the local fans are already motivated and we'll do everything we can to get those fans ready. I think those fans, they have been waiting for two years for this, so I think they have embraced The Ryder Cup. I feel like they have made me one of their own here and I'm real happy to be here and I couldn't think of a better place for us to play the 37th Ryder Cup than Louisville, Kentucky. If I could hand-pick any place in the country, this would probably be the spot. I think they will be behind us. The message to the crowd is be enthusiastic, raucous, crazy if you like, but keep it all within the realm of good sportsmanship.

Q. The Open Champion, would you be slightly worried about what you've seen in the last few weeks, that perhaps fatigue might be setting in, and is it that you think the adrenaline rush of The Ryder Cup can overcome that?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: No, he's rested. I spoke to him. I'm very pleased. We're very pleased, the way guys that played last week in Germany, obviously Robert Karlsson won, and the rest of the guys played very well.

Outside of that, the rest of the team is rested, and Padraig is one of them. He's had the weeks off. I chatted with him and he knew what he was doing with his schedule, so the guys have been practicing and kept themselves all light and well oiled, that was kind of one of my requests. No, the team is raring to go.

Q. I've heard enough from Paul on this but not really your thoughts; on the absence of Tiger, what effect does that have do you think on the U.S. Team in?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: I think because they have had so much time, I think if it happened the week before, maybe that could make a difference. But the fact that it happened in June, what's that, a good three months ago, three or four months ago, I feel the American Team at times have recognized that and set their game plan, and I don't feel it's ... I can see the positives and the negative.

I think the positive might be the American Team might want to show the rest of the golfing world, the rest of America and maybe Tiger, that they can play and they can perform better and they can win without him.

On my side, I reckon this is the one that Tiger was going to play a blind eye and win every match. I think they have lost out on a few points.

Q. Just wanted to know your thoughts on Captain's Assistants, you seemed to have a change of heart and you've added some more people this week?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: I've got a couple of ideas up my sleeve, yeah, which will be revealed.

Q. And do you plan to play every one of the players before the singles?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: I'm going to play them all the first day, yeah, I'm going to get 12 out against his eight. I thought that would be good tactics (shaking head).

There will be goals we want and whether we can achieve them, yeah, my No. 1 goal will be that I'll be scratching my head ... well, I won't have to scratch my head maybe Thursday afternoon when I put the team; I have 12 guys playing so well. We shall see. We shall see where we get to in the next three days' practice.

Q. By saying, therefore, that you will have something sorted out on that count, do you now expect, therefore, that it's not possible to captain aside to the proper extent of The Ryder Cup with just two of you?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: No, I'm not saying that. Tony Jacklin did all right. How many did Tony have?

Q. Two people.

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: Did he.

Q. Fewer people at the matches; it's easier.

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: I have a game plan. I know how I can hop around. I know how I can get my information. I'm more than happy with what I've got and the way I'm doing it and what I've got up my sleeve.

Q. Can I just go back on the previous answer about, is it your intention or your hope to play all 12 on the first day?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: Do you want it in stone?

Q. What is your hope?

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: What is my hope? I think if things were going very well, I'd have all 12 out day one.

Q. There's been a lot of talk about the Kentucky boys, pairing them together; that could be the crowd, a way to get them involved, especially in the first match maybe, and they have said they played quite a bit together as well.

CAPTAIN PAUL AZINGER: Yeah, they do. I might put them out first day, first match, get everybody going, we'll see. (Laughter).

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: Where's my pen? (Looking around and under table).

CAPTAIN PAUL AZINGER: Haven't decided. I'll let you know, though. (Laughter).

Q. Is there more pressure on the Europeans to continue the dominance you've had recently or on the Americans to finally get the Ryder Cup back?

CAPTAIN PAUL AZINGER: You know, there's always pressure at The Ryder Cup, and anybody who says there's not pressure is either out of touch or has never been here. So I feel like that the Americans, we have an opportunity here that I think the Europeans have brought an incredible team over here and we have a great opportunity to change it.

We have I think everything to gain in this situation, not a lot of people expect us to pull this off, minus Tiger Woods, so I feel like our guys are going to ... everybody feels pressure, but hopefully they will be free-wheeling out there. That's my hope.

CAPTAIN NICK FALDO: Yeah, I feel ... well, I've got 12 guys who want to win, simple as that.

And it's going to be an electrifying, spectacular week this week. We shall see.

Q. If you look back over the last 10 years, the U.S. players have had far more different partnerships than Europe; do you think that's a product of Europe winning early and being comfortable with sticking with what they have got, or the U.S. maybe panicking and switching and trying to find a hot hand?

CAPTAIN PAUL AZINGER: I believe the team that loses always makes the necessary adjustments to fix the problem.

So clearly, if you're behind every morning for six straight Ryder Cups, or every day the first day for six straight Ryder Cups, which we have been, that's 12 years of Ryder Cup Matches we've been behind on the first day; then, of course, you're going to make some changes, and if you're the team that's doing all of the getting ahead, then you're going to stick with what's been working.

So it's no different than the NFL teams play each other twice in the season, you lose the first game, the team that wins the game does everything the same and the team that loses makes the necessary adjustments to try to get it right.

I believe a lot of the switching around has been simply the results of being behind early.

ESPN Hot Seat: Anthony Kim

At the age of 23, Anthony Kim very well may be the future of golf -- except for one small problem. He's already a present-day superstar.
The California Kid has enjoyed a coming-out party in 2008 after victories in the Wachovia Championship and AT&T National while amassing nearly $4.3 million in earnings.

Anthony Kim claimed his first two PGA Tour victories in 2008 at the Wachovia Championship and the AT&T National.
He also punched a ticket to his first Ryder Cup. Before partaking in the competition at Valhalla, Kim sat down on the ESPN.com Hot Seat to discuss his relationship with Sergio Garcia, a potential rivalry with Tiger Woods and how the current year has differed from 2007.
Q: The last time the Ryder Cup was played in the U.S., you were still in college. Two years ago, you didn't even have a PGA Tour card yet. Do you have to pinch yourself sometimes to make sure this is all really happening?
A: Well, it's definitely pretty special to have it happen, but I'm ready for it. I'm ready for the challenge and ready to bring that Cup back home.
Q: How much have you watched of previous Ryder Cups? Been glued to the TV, or busy working on your own game?
A: I haven't really watched too many of the Ryder Cups. I think I watched the one at Brookline [in 1999], because the U.S. was down so much and I wanted to see if they could come back. But other than that, I haven't really watched too many of them.
Q: Be honest with me: I know you're a confident player, but at the beginning of the season, did you see yourself making this team?
A: I did. That was my goal for this year. One of my main goals was to obviously be prepared for every tournament I play, but to make this Ryder Cup team. Now that it's happened, it feels pretty good.
Q: Have you spoken with some of the veteran players about what the week will entail?
A: I have. They've said, "Rest up, get ready for a pretty emotional week and let the golf take care of itself."
Q: What's the single best piece of advice you've been given in advance of the Ryder Cup?
A: Play golf like you know how.
Q: Hunter Mahan, who has made as many previous Ryder Cup appearances (0) as yourself, recently said players are treated like "slaves" during the week. What was your reaction to those comments?
A: Well, I know Hunter didn't mean that. I've known Hunter for a while, so I know that's not what he would say. He obviously made a mistake. I don't think he meant it that way. It just came out the wrong way, and I think he regrets it.
Q: Is there something to that notion that there's a whole lot of pomp and circumstance going on and not as much attention to golf?
A: Well, there's definitely a lot of extracurricular activities that you have to do other than the golf, but that just comes with the territory, and it's an honor to be a part of all that.
Q: On Thursday of Ryder Cup week, captain Paul Azinger hands you a blank lineup card for the week and tells you to fill in the names of your playing partners. Whose name do you write down?
A: Eleven other guys on the team.
Q: C'mon, give me somebody.
A: Well, Phil [Mickelson] and I have talked about playing together, so he's very high on the list. Jim Furyk, a veteran. Boo Weekley and I have become good friends. Really, everybody who has made the team I have become really good friends with before making this team, so it's hard to pick just one.
Q: How about if you could pick your opponents? Any specific European players you'd like to get a chance at playing?
A: You know, I just want to rack up as many points as possible, so whoever's in my way, I'm just going to try to play my best and get the win.
Q: You're being so political. Are you running for office or what?
A: [Laughs] You know what? This is a better way to answer questions!
Q: Earlier this year, there was a report that you hit into Sergio Garcia during a practice round and he wasn't very happy. What's your relationship like with him?
A: Very good. We're good friends. I think some people took it the wrong way, because we were both joking around. We're good friends on and off the course. Obviously, we're going to be on different teams, so we might have to play against each other, but off the course we're good friends.
Q: Some have said you're the next young player -- or maybe the first young player -- who will challenge Tiger Woods for the No. 1 ranking. Is that a premature notion, or do you think you've proven yourself worthy of such praise?
A: It's premature. I mean, I haven't won as many tournaments as I need to win, haven't had as much success as I would have wanted, but at the same time I'm working toward that, and hopefully I can achieve that by the end of the year and keep improving.
Q: With increased expectations, is there increased pressure on you as well?
A: No. I put as much pressure on myself as anyone can put on me. I don't worry about what everyone is saying. If I had, I probably wouldn't have made it out here to begin with.
Q: You talked earlier about the Ryder Cup being a goal. What are some other specific goals you had going into this year as far as win totals, world ranking, things like that?
A: Well, just to be prepared for every event I was playing. I think if I did that, I was going to win a couple of times and if I got a couple of good breaks, win more than multiple times. So I've done that, I've been prepared almost every tournament, and I'm going to try and keep doing that.
Q: You've talked so much about how you have matured as both a player and person in the past year. What was a typical Anthony Kim practice session like in 2007?
A: Lace up the shoes in the locker room and head to the tee. I mean, that's pretty much it. Maybe hit five or 10 putts, but I was on the tee after breakfast.
Q: And how has that changed in 2008?
A: Oh, I'm putting in my time. I've made sure I have a routine. About an hour and a half before, I'm out here stretching and putting and chipping, making sure that I'm ready to go when the ball's in the air.
Q: And you feel like that's been the secret to making you a better player this year?
A: Absolutely.
Q: You've been very candid about wanting to win the FedEx Cup for monetary reasons. I think many of the fans out there already see PGA Tour players as being well-off financially, but $10 million is a lot of money, isn't it?
A: It is. But it's not really just about the money. Tiger is obviously the first one to win the FedEx Cup; I'd like to do something that he's done, because it's nice to follow in the footsteps of greatness. I feel like I'm playing good enough. I have a good opportunity to do so. And, you know, if the money comes, the money comes, and I buy this house that I want.
Q: That can buy a lot of belt buckles, too, huh?
A: Yeah.
Q: Seriously, though: Did you ever think that would be one of the main topics you'd be talking about every week?
A: No, I didn't, because the belt buckle that I had was worth 40 bucks -- and it's not worth that anymore. So that's the last thing I expected.
Q: Let's see … $10 million divided by 40 -- how many can you buy with that?
A: A lot!

From Prison To Caddie

To be working on the bag of a man many regard as the best young talent on the PGA Tour is the stuff caddies dream about while charting yardage books, cleaning clubs and hustling from one PGA Tour town to the next.

Eric Larson, left, and Anthony Kim, right, started working together this year on a four-week trial basis. Kim earn his first PGA Tour victory in Week 3 of the deal and the two have been together since. In the case of Eric Larson, he did it while sitting in a prison cell as the world of golf passed him by for a decade. And thanks to his good friend Mark Calcavecchia -- who stayed true to the promise of a job upon his release -- Larson today is the envy of many in his field.

Larson, 47, could not be happier working for Anthony Kim, 23. Toting a golf bag between the ropes of the game's richest fairways for a guy half his age will take Larson to Valhalla Golf Club, where Kim will play on his first U.S. Ryder Cup team starting Sept. 19. Coincidence or not, Larson was on the bag for both of Kim's first two PGA Tour victories after hooking up with him on a trial basis this spring.

So far, things are working out quite nicely for both.

"He's going to have a great career, and I'm fortunate to be in this position," Larson said after a recent round. "I'm going to do everything in my power to stay with him."

If he were so inclined, Larson could give Kim more than advice about club selection and the way a green breaks. He could tell him about persimmon woods and balata balls, instruments of the trade that were common back when Larson first caddied on the PGA Tour for the likes of Ken Green and Calcavecchia.

Larson worked for both players in the 1980s and 1990s, but also had a side income that got him into big trouble and eventually led to an 11-year stay in federal prison for selling cocaine.

Although it is a topic he would prefer to keep in the past, Larson has been open and honest about his mistakes and what led to them.

He said he began buying and selling cocaine simply for "monetary purposes. I didn't use it and I never brought it on tour. … That doesn't make it any better. That's just the way it was."

As part owner of a health club, Larson ran into financial difficulty. After Larson was late on some payments after taking out a loan at a high interest rate, his cocaine supplier gave Larson's name to federal authorities, leading to an arrest and conviction on a single felony count of conspiracy to sell, distribute or dispense a controlled substance.

Larson received a sentence of 13½ years in prison, but served 11 with good behavior. Due to federal guidelines, he got the surprisingly long sentence and served his times in four separate federal prisons in three different states.
Calcavecchia visited him at each one.

"He never lost his attitude, even though there were some down times," said the 13-time PGA Tour winner and 26-year veteran. "He had appeals getting denied, and there were some tough months. He's always kept a sense of humor and good attitude. Considering what he's been through, I don't know if there has ever been a prisoner who didn't change. But he stayed the same person, didn't act bitter."

Larson earned a college degree while in prison, and for a time was making about $13 a month doing various tasks. He kept positive, however, knowing that a job awaited him when he got out.

"He gave me hope," Larson said. "As I was doing my time, I was able to do all the right things knowing I was going to come back on the PGA Tour. If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't be out here and I definitely wouldn't be in the position I'm in right now."

Larson was released to a halfway house in West Palm Beach, Fla., in February 2006, which allowed him to caddie for Calcavecchia that year at the Honda Classic. Due to a ban on travel, Larson didn't go to another tournament until the Western Open that year. He then caddied for Calcavecchia at the PGA Championship and throughout the following spring.
It was when Calcavecchia won the PODS Championship last year -- earning Larson a hefty commission from the $954,000 first prize -- that Larson was able to take big steps in putting his life back together. Caddies typically earn a weekly travel allowance plus 5 percent of a player's earnings, with some players paying a higher percentage for top-10 finishes and victories. Larson owed a $25,000 fine to the federal government, not to mention the expenses associated with starting anew.
"He did very well for me," Larson said. "It was a great year. I also caddied for Steve Marino for seven tournaments and for A.K. for one. I was out here 32 or 33 weeks, and I just wanted to get out, show my face so people would know me again. It worked out for me to be able to branch out a little bit."

That was always part of Calcavecchia's plan. Never one to use a caddie exclusively and for any extended period of time, his hope was to get Larson back on his feet financially and in the presence of other players.
And nearing age 50 with the Champions Tour in sight, Calcavecchia figured it would be best for Larson to hook up with somebody younger.

"He always said, 'Look, I'm going to help you get back on your feet and if an opportunity comes up, you need to take a shot with it.' I think in the back of his mind, he was always hoping he could play well for me and get me back on my feet and then try to hook up with some young guy," Larson said. "And if I ever wanted to work for him occasionally, I could. He told me as long as he was playing golf, if I didn't have another job, I could work for him. Because he wouldn't hire a guy full time."
With Kim, Larson has hit the lottery. Depending on the deal they negotiated, it is no stretch to think that Larson was paid in the $100,000 range for each of Kim's victories at the Wachovia Championship and AT&T National. Both tournament wins earned Kim in excess of $1 million.

"He's been tremendous in my growing as a player and a person," Kim said. "He just brings a new perspective, a great attitude every morning, and I feel if there was something lacking before a round, it was [me] being positive and happy to be there. I feel like with everything Eric has gone through, he feels happy to be out here."

"It's incredible how things have turned out for E," Calcavecchia said. "Three years ago, he was in the slammer and he probably didn't know the difference between Tiger Woods and Anthony Kim. If you ask Eric every day, no matter what happens, life is good."

Or, put another way, Woods had yet to turn pro and Kim was 10 years old when Larson went away to prison.
"Eric is the first person to recognize, 'I broke the law, I deserved to be punished,'" said Kevin Richardson, a friend and attorney who let Larson live with his family for six months in West Palm Beach after his release and helped him get a job at Bear Lakes Country Club in the same town. "I just questioned the [length of] the sentence for what he did. It certainly punished him and had a great role in rehabilitation and hopefully it will serve as a deterrent for others."

Larson worked the bag room for six months at Bear Lakes while having to stay close to home. He then slowly but surely worked his way back to the tour, with the help of Calcavecchia.

Last year, Larson got to know Kim simply by being out on tour. The opportunity to caddie for him came at the Texas Open.
That led to another chance this spring when Kim decided to make a change in caddies. With Calcavecchia's blessing, Larson went on a four-week trial run with Kim -- who won the third week, at Wachovia.

"He's definitely matured," said Larson of Kim, who was known for being on the cocky side during his rookie season. "He's grown up a lot, saying and doing all the right things. I think he expected to come out here and win quick without putting in the hard work. During the offseason, he put in the hard work. It took a little while for it to kick. Now it's kicked in and the confidence is there and everything else has fallen into place.

"I just happened to be there at the right time."

A marketing dream with his model looks and stylish dress, Villegas won for the first time on the PGA TOUR with three big putts on the back nine at Bellerive on Sunday for a wire-to-wire victory in the BMW Championship.

Villegas closed with a 2-under 68 for a two-shot victory over Dudley Hart, who birdied the final two holes to earn a trip to the Masters with his highest finish in two years.

With one Playoff event remaining, the FedExCup essentially is over.

Vijay Singh, who won the first two events, tied for 44th and earned enough points that all he has to do is complete four rounds at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola in two weeks to collect the $10 million payoff.

Villegas, a 26-year-old Colombian in his third year on TOUR, finished at 15-under 265 and collected $1.26 million.

"It's awesome to be here,'" said Villegas, who wore a solid white outfit accented by a yellow belt and painter's cap. "Hopefully, it's the first of many.''

Villegas had been building toward a moment like this in the last few months. He was near the lead going into the weekend at the British Open, rallied to finish fourth in the PGA Championship, then started the final round last week at the Deutsche Bank Championship one shot behind until faltering.

He had ample opportunity to let this one get away, too.

First came back-to-back bogeys on the front nine, losing the lead to Jim Furyk. Villegas' appeal began two years ago at Doral when he finished in a tie for second behind Tiger Woods before a Miami crowd loaded with Hispanic fans. Then came his "Spider-Man'' style of reading putts, contorting his body into a horizontal position to keep his eyes as close to the ground as possible.

Endorsement deals and photo shoots followed, not to mention a strong following of females in his gallery. All he lacked was a PGA TOUR trophy, which he earned over three days in a weather-plagued event.

Despite a few hiccups -- such as a four-putt double bogey in the second round Saturday and three straight misses from inside 8 feet on Sunday -- he never buckled.

Villegas went over $3 million in earnings for the year and likely will move into the top 20 in the world ranking.

And yes, he still has a mathematical chance for the FedExCup.

He moved up to No. 2 in the standings, but even if he wins THE TOUR Championship and Singh finishes last, Villegas still would finish 101 points behind. His only hope is to win at East Lake and for Singh to withdraw or get disqualified.

The volatile points system introduced his year brought some fresh faces to East Lake for what once was the TOUR's All-Star game for the top 30 players on the money list.

Among those who advanced to the final round of the playoffs were Kevin Sutherland, Ken Duke, Tim Clark, Bubba Watson and Hart, who moved up 53 spots to No. 14 with his runner-up finish.

Hart saw that he was tied for third as he stood in the 18th green. He turned to his caddie and said if one person passed him, he was out of the top 30.

"I basically told him, 'Birdie or bogey.' I said, 'Let's try to give this thing a run,''' Hart said. "It was one of those things where I was going to give it a run and hit the best putt I could. And fortunately, it went in.''

The final spot went to Chad Campbell, who got no points this week after withdrawing Saturday to fly home to Dallas after learning his wife went into labor. Dix Phillip Campbell was born later that evening, wrapping up a whirlwind week that began with Campbell being picked for the Ryder Cup.

LPGA Tour should have seen the fallout coming from English policy

In this political season, one of the words that enters the vocabulary of the talking heads on television that we don't otherwise hear is "vet," and we aren't talking about horse doctors here.

The purpose of a vetting process is to make certain there are no time bombs hidden in the background of a candidate that could explode during the campaign. Clearly, no one at the LPGA vetted the impact that suspending players who could not speak English would have on the various constituencies of the tour.

The decision Friday to rescind the penalty was a shockingly swift admission that the original decision was not thoroughly thought out. In a statement issued under the name of Carolyn Bivens, the tour said: "The LPGA has received valuable feedback from a variety of constituents regarding the recently announced penalties attached to our effective communications policy. We have decided to rescind those penalty provisions."

This entire mess, which is embarrassing for the LPGA at best and potentially damaging to its efforts to do business in Asia at worst, could have been avoided if that "valuable feedback" had been sought before the rule was unilaterally imposed at a meeting with the Korean players in Portland, Ore., in late August. The decision to rescind the penalty was the right one, but is it a large enough eraser to eliminate the memory of the original insult?

Shortly after the tour confirmed that players with two years on tour would be required to be proficient in English by the end of the 2009, I received this ominous warning from an extremely well-connected source involved in tournament management: "Keep an eye on the pressure special-interest groups will put on politicians, the LPGA, sponsors, individual players and TV."
That's exactly what happened. A major LPGA sponsor -- State Farm Insurance -- publicly distanced itself from the policy, and an Asian-American state senator in California said the policy might violate state law on discrimination in the workplace and could result in the LPGA's being banned from doing business in California.

And if that was going on in public, you can imagine what was happening behind closed doors. The LPGA is an enormously complex community, one of the most diverse in all of sports. There are 121 international players from 26 nations on the LPGA Tour this year, 45 of those are from South Korea. Not only are the tour's players multinational, but its sponsors are, too. It's a delicate coalition.

Given that all the Europeans on tour speak English, as well as the handful of players from Latin America, the policy clearly was aimed at the Koreans. And to offend the Korean community was not only wrong, it was bad business. The tour's single biggest revenue stream is Korean TV money. What is to be gained by offending that community?

The ultimate silliness about this entire situation is the small number of players it really affected. A well-placed source within the LPGA hierarchy said there were "perhaps a dozen" Korean players on tour who did not possess the English skills the LPGA desired. A caddie who works for a Korean player placed the number at "about five to seven."

Doesn't it seem as if the tour could have dealt with the problem on an individual basis, as it has been trying to do through its Kolon-LPGA Cross-Cultural Program for three years? Among other things, that program provides language training through the Rosetta Stone system.

Does the LPGA have a problem regarding language? No question, although not as great as some think. But I have seen the eyes of reporters glaze over when a player speaks for two minutes in Korean and the translator then leans into the microphone and informs us: "She says she's very happy."

Many good stories about compelling personalities doubtless have been lost behind the language barrier, as much because of the sometimes lazy media and poor translations as because of the player. But to require that all players learn to speak English under penalty of suspension was an attempt to impose marketing skills on players who should be judged only by their skills on the golf course.

Another complicating factor is the American track record on language skills. There is a joke Europeans on the LPGA Tour like to tell.
What do you call someone who speaks three languages?
Trilingual.
What do you call someone who speaks two languages?
Bilingual.
What do you call someone who speaks one language?
American.

As a nation, we tend to think the whole world should speak English
Lost in the entire issue has been one that strikes at the heart of the matter, and at the heart of women's golf -- if not at golf itself. The large contingent of Asian players -- primarily Korean -- on the LPGA Tour would be absorbed more easily if the Americans just played better. The language situation was not as much of an issue last year when Americans were winning.
In 2007, nine Americans won LPGA events, and, for the most part, they were the right nine: Morgan Pressel, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis, Brittany Lincicome, Stacy Prammanasudh, Meaghan Francella, Nicole Castrale and Sherri Steinhauer.
This year, the only Americans to win are Creamer (twice) and Leta Lindley. The majors were won by Lorena Ochoa (Mexico), Yani Tseng (Taiwan), Inbee Park (Korea) and Ji-Yai Shin (Korea). Of those four, only Shin struggles with English. It is no coincidence, I'm guessing, that this policy was imposed in a down year for American players.

We live in an increasingly small world tied together more closely every day by technology. The marketplace is global now no matter what business you are in. And the LPGA has done a brilliant job of transitioning into a world tour, opening up many new revenue streams. Those sources of revenue remain open only if a high level of cultural respect is maintained.
I have often wondered whether Tiger Woods would be as revered if he had grown up in his mother's homeland, Thailand, instead of his father's, America. What if Tiger spoke Thai and not English? If he were the same remarkable player, would we require him to speak English under penalty of suspension, or would we just marvel at his skills?

"After hearing the concerns, we believe there are other ways to achieve our shared objective of supporting and enhancing the business opportunities to every Tour player," the LPGA said in its statement, adding that it will have "a revised approach" by the end of the year.

This is a road the LPGA went down at the beginning of the 2006 season when it imposed more restrictive credential language on the media without consulting any of the impacted organizations, resulting in a media boycott at the Fields Open. It may or may not be related, but Fields did not renew its contract with the LPGA when it expired after this year's tournament.

That decision, like the attempt to impose a language requirement on players, failed to look down the road in an attempt to identify and avoid the potential potholes. Clearly, the LPGA did not learn from the credential flap. Perhaps backing off from its ill-thought-out language policy will be a humiliating experience of enough magnitude that, before making future decisions, "valuable feedback" will be sought before policy is established rather than after it is imposed.

This was a black eye that could have been avoided. The LPGA was hit by a sucker punch -- after setting itself up as the sucker.

Bivens' missteps starting to add up

The discriminatory guideline is gone. Now it's time for Carolyn Bivens' moneygrubbing to follow.

For years now, the LPGA commissioner has come up with all kinds of tone-deaf ways to expand her tour's brand and bring in cash. Asking all players to learn some English is only the latest and greatest example. The goal is understandable -- all businesses have to be aware of the bottom line -- but the execution has been awful. Bivens has angered everyone -- players, sponsors, media, fans and now an entire culture -- and the women's tour has only come closer to ruin.
When Bivens took over in 2005, the LPGA Tour had already accomplished what the NBA and MLB wanted for so long -- to become a global game. The tour had a Swedish superstar in Annika Sorenstam, an athletic and charming rival in Australian Karrie Webb, a philanthropic and funny big-swinger in Lorena Ochoa and a pioneer in Se Ri Pak who changed the face of golf even more than Tiger Woods.

For fans looking for American stars, the tour saw the emergence of some of the brightest young players in its history: Morgan Pressel, Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis. The LPGA even had a ratings magnet in Michelle Wie, who caused tons of headaches -- though she was never a member of the tour -- but also brought enough fans/gawkers/skeptics to sell plenty of TV time.
Of course there were problems, too. Annika was nearing the end of her career. Wie was faltering. Creamer, Pressel and Gulbis didn't win quite enough. And the quiet South Koreans never seemed to stop winning. But Bivens had a core of marketable players who never got into legal trouble and always went the extra mile to promote their tour. All Bivens had to do was let the brand grow.

But she hasn't.

Go all the way back to early 2006. Bivens came up with the idea to own the rights to all the photos and media stories from all LPGA tournaments. The goal, of course, was to create cash flow. This is similar to what the NFL and Big Ten Network have done in building their own TV networks. But the LPGA does not create demand like football, so the Associated Press (among other national outlets) walked out on the Fields Open in Hawaii.

The tournament ended in a fantastic showdown between Wie and Pressel. But the buzz went to Bivens' clumsy move. The Fields Open -- then a brand-new event -- is now gone.

Things got worse from there. Bivens pulled the plug on the ShopRite Classic in Atlantic City and gave that weekend to a new Ginn event in South Carolina. Once again, the goal was money -- Bobby Ginn is loaded. But the ShopRite drew a good field and had a strong tradition. Now there is no ShopRite and there is no Ginn tournament in South Carolina.

The penny-pinching continued. The Tour decided to charge its events a $100,000 staging fee. It stopped paying its half of the fee for electronic scoreboards. And those were just the public head-scratchers. At the U.S. Women's Open in Newport, Bivens wanted top players to sign flags to show appreciation to Rolex, sponsor of the much-criticized world rankings. But she also asked Wie to sign a flag, even though Wie was not a member and sponsored by Omega.

The moves miffed and then infuriated some of the tour's most loyal supporters. A flood of resignations followed -- most notably that of Deb Richard (a Bivens hire), who complained of "losing faith in leadership." On a lower bureaucratic level, Korean-American Kyumin Shim left the staff after years of working to help Korean players with speeches and logistics.
Now comes the most egregious example: asking players to learn English or face a suspension. The move was questionable at best -- will better English really lead to more money? -- but it ended up upsetting everyone from the ACLU to Ochoa. What's lost in all the controversy was the fact that Korean TV contributes millions to the LPGA each year. Bivens bit the hand that feeds her.

Yet perhaps the most troubling aspect of Bivens' tenure is the way she strives to own every aspect of business without owning up to her actions.

She angered the Tournament Owners Association -- chock-full of sponsors including McDonald's and Coca-Cola -- by not showing up for a scheduled speech two years ago.

As the Fields fiasco blew up, Bivens remained in her hotel room, out of sight. When Wie refused to apologize to Sorenstam after pulling out of her South Carolina tournament, media requests for Bivens' comments went unanswered for three full days.
The commissioner reportedly asked for the resignation of much-respected senior vice president Barb Trammell not in person, but over the phone. And last week, when complaints about the English mandate came from everywhere, Bivens sent deputy commissioner Libba Galloway to take the initial public-relations hit. It would have been nice to see an Asian face defend the new regulation, but Bivens only employs one Asian staffer for a Tour with 45 Koreans.

No one thinks a commissioner should refrain from going after money. And no one thinks the LPGA doesn't need more marketing value in an era without Annika. But the tour's best aspect is its players -- women with class, charm, a ton of talent and most importantly, incredible life stories with roots all over the globe.

Bivens should just get out of the way and let those stories unfold. Otherwise, this sad chapter of the LPGA's history should come to an end.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Even with his golf done for the year, Tiger Woods found something to celebrate Tuesday: His wife is pregnant with their second child.

Woods said on his Web site that Elin is expecting in late winter without being more specific on a due date.

He has not played since his U.S. Open victory in June, and two weeks later had reconstructive surgery on his left knee that put him out for the year. Woods’ first child, daughter Sam, was born on Monday after the 2007 U.S. Open.

“Elin is feeling great and we are both thrilled,” Woods said. “While my injury has disappointing and frustrating, it has allowed me to spend a lot of time watching Sam grow. I can’t begin to tell you how rewarding it is being a dad and spending time with her and Elin.

“The injury has been a blessing and a disappointment.”

The world No. 1 player has begun rehabilitation and has traveled recently to Dubai and New York for business projects.

Woods had said after he married in 2004 that he wanted more than one child. Woods was an only child, while Elin has a twin sister.

Tim Clark needed only one birdie over his final two holes to shoot 59. He finished with consecutive bogeys and had to settle for a one-shot lead Saturday in the Deutsche Bank Championship.
He still matched his career low with a 9-under 62 on soft and vulnerable TPC Boston, giving him a one-shot lead over Mike Weir of Canada at the halfway point of the PGA Tour's second playoff event.
On another day of lowing scoring, Clark was trying to get into contention when he shot to the top of the leaderboard by playing a six-hole stretch in 7 under, including two eagles. After a wedge to 3 feet on the par-5 seventh put the South African at 11 under for the round with two holes to play, it all fell apart.
Clark missed the green on the par-3 eighth and failed to convert an 8-foot par putt.
"That was the end of the dream," Clark said.
He missed the ninth fairway, watched his approach bound through the green and he missed his 10-foot par putt for a 62, putting him at 14-under 128.
Weir, who tied the course record Friday with a 61, took a while to warm up until he settled in for a 68.
Defending champion Phil Mickelson overcame a double bogey on the 16th hole with a 33 on the front nine to make the cut on the number, but two Ryder Cup hopefuls from Europe were not so fortunate. Ian Poulter and Paul Casey, both trying to impress captain Nick Faldo before he makes his two picks Saturday, missed the cut.
Poulter lashed out at the media, saying the distractions this week caused him to waste energy on the wrong things.
"It's a joke," Poulter said after a 74. "It's not the kind of buzz you want to play golf on, trust me. The kind of nonsense that's been in my head for a whole week is not the right kind of pressure.
It's nonsense," he said. "You've read it. You've wrote it. Some of you might be guilty or not, I don't know. But boy, what one hell of a week."

NORTON, Mass. -- Ian Poulter lashed out at the media Saturday after missing the cut in the Deutsche Bank Championship, claiming they created too large of a distraction about the Ryder Cup to allow him to concentrate on golf.
With his last chance to leave an impression on Nick Faldo before the European captain announces his two picks Sunday, Poulter shot a 74 to miss the cut by five shots at the TPC Boston.
Paul Casey, also hopeful of being a pick, took triple bogey on his 15th hole and likewise missed the cut. They are considered favorites to be picked, along with Darren Clarke, who is playing in Scotland this week.
Poulter said he was exhausted after his week, which only lasted two rounds, and he blamed the media on both sides of the Atlantic for making the week harder than it should have been.
"It's been a very long week, and I think a lot of misspent energy has been taken up by obvious press -- media, players, everybody. It's just so mentally draining to be in this position, to listen, to read, to hear all the B.S. this week. I'm spent. I'm exhausted. I didn't want to finish the last two tournaments like this."
Asked if he thought Faldo would pick him, Poulter glared at a reporter.
"Do you know tiger woods golf video? I'm sick and tired of all this nonsense," he said. "I'm absolutely spent. I can't waste any more energy on this. If I get the call, I'm ready to play. And trust me, I'll do my job."
Missing the cut also meant Poulter was done for the year on the PGA Tour, having no chance to move into the top 70 for the third round of the playoffs in St. Louis.

Poulter said the entire week was one big distraction.
"It's a joke," Poulter said. "It's not the kind of buzz you want to play golf on, trust me. The kind of nonsense that's been in my head for a whole week is not the right kind of pressure.

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. -- Tom Kite surged past Scott Simpson with three birdies in four holes on the back nine and finished at 14-under to win his second Boeing Classic title on Sunday afternoon.
It's the first victory for Kite since winning the 2006 Boeing Classic in a playoff over Keith Fergus, and the 10th Champions Tour title in his career. Kite was able to avoid a playoff this time by sinking three birdies inside 10 feet on the backside, then capped his 6-under round of 66 with a birdie on the 18th, finishing two shots ahead of playing partner Simpson.
Kite found himself two shots behind after bogeying the par-4 11th hole, then started his decisive string of birdies. It started on the 12th when Kite's second shot from 133 yards landed within 8-feet. He avoided temptation to go for the green on the canyon-crossing 14th, instead playing about 50 yards short of the green, then making a 9-footer to draw even with Simpson.
Kite took the lead on the 15th, playing the long par-5 perfectly and dropping a 7-foot putt to reach 13-under, then made pars on his final three holes to cinch the victory.
Kite lost in a playoff earlier this season at The ACE Group Classic in Florida and was in the final group on Sunday at the Bank of America Championship in June, but couldn't pull out a victory in either situation.
Meanwhile, Simpson was struggling to make pars on the back nine and let a two-shot lead to start the day vanish. He finished with a 1-under 71. Simpson birdied Nos. 1 and 7, then bogeyed the 8th, his first bogey since the final round of the JELD-WEN Tradition last week, a span of 44 holes. Simpson was then stuck at 12-under, failing to give himself any reasonable birdie chances on the back nine.
Simpson's hopes ended when he missed a 2-foot par putt on the 16th, falling two back of Kite with two holes to play.
John Cook was tied for second when he made the turn at 10-under, but his irons started to fail him on the back nine. He saved par after poor approaches on Nos. 10 and 11, but was in the bunker on 12 and could not save his par, falling back to 9-under.
Cook made a birdie on the 16th, and added another when he placed his tee shot within 5 feet on the 185-yard par-3. By then, Kite had birdied the 15th and Cook finished two shots back.
The only player to make a charge from the back of the field was defending champion Denis Watson, who started the day at 3-under, then eagled the par-5 first when he holed out from about 65 yards. He added birdies at Nos. 4, 5, 6 and his birdie on the long par-4 11th got him to 9-under.
Then Watson started missing chances. He saw a 13-footer slide past on No. 14, then left a 10-footer on the lip at No. 15. Watson added one more birdie coming in, but his chances ended with a bogey on the par-5 18th. He finished at 9-under and tied for fifth, his best finish since tying for fifth at the Regions Charity Classic in late May.
"I was feeling like if I shot 10-under today, I could win the golf tournament," Watson said. "If I get to 13 [under], that is tough at the end of the day."

Curtis Captures Spot on Ryder Cup team

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Ben Curtis will have to ditch the NFL apparel next month for the Stars & Stripes. A runner-up finish in the PGA Championship on Sunday earned him his first trip to the Ryder Cup.
"I love Ben Curtis a lot, and I love the fact he's made the team," U.S. captain Paul Azinger said.
Curtis lost out on a chance to win another major when he bogeyed two of the last four holes at Oakland Hills, but only later did he realize the consolation prize. His tie for second moved him from No. 20 to No. 7 in the standings, earning him one of the eight automatic spots in the qualifying that ended with the PGA Championship.
"It's almost a victory in itself," said Curtis, who wears apparel of NFL teams when he plays on the PGA Tour.
Three of the eight Americans who qualified will be Ryder Cup rookies -- Anthony Kim (No. 5), Curtis and Boo Weekley, who closed with a 66 to finish tied for 20th to secure the final spot.
Justin Leonard finished sixth and will play in the Ryder Cup for the first time since he holed that 45-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole at Brookline to cap off the largest rally in history in 1999. That also was the last time the Americans won.
Phil Mickelson tied for seventh and was atop the points list -- Tiger Woods clinched the No. 1 spot in June after winning the U.S. Open, but is out the rest of the year after reconstructive surgery on his left knee.
The rest of the U.S. qualifiers were Stewart Cink, Kenny Perry and Jim Furyk.
Azinger will announce his four captain's picks on Sept. 2. Europe still has three tournaments left before 10 players qualify, and captain Nick Faldo will have two picks after that.
The Ryder Cup will be played Sept. 19-21 at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky.
Steve Stricker was at No. 8 in the standings going into the week, but he was hurt by a 77 in the third round. Stricker closed with a 69, but any chance of overtaking Weekley unfolded before his eyes.
"I just wanted to shoot something good and see what happened," Stricker said. "I thought maybe I could catch Boo, but he was playing right in front of me, so I knew by the last few holes that wasn't going to happen."
Curtis won the British Open in 2003 -- his first major -- but did not make the Presidents Cup team. He didn't figure to be on this Ryder Cup team until he was runner-up at the Wachovia Championship in early May, then tied for seventh in the British Open.
And then came his week at Oakland Hills, where he took the 54-hole lead by one shot and was still tied for the lead with four holes to play until a bogey from the rough on the 15th.
"He deserves to be on the team, doesn't he?" Stricker said. "He's stood up to the challenge all week."
Weekley matched Harrington for the best score of the final round and will bring his homespun speech to the U.S. team room. He did not stop for questions after his round so he could get to the airport.
"Got to run," he said.
Brandt Snedeker, who was in 15th place, needed to finish at least seventh to have a chance. He was at 4 over for the tournament through six holes, but a double bogey on No. 7 sent him to a 73.
"It's going to come down to how I play the next three events," said Snedeker, who defends his title next week in Greensboro. "Hopefully, I can play well and get on his radar. I'm disappointed, because I had a chance to take care of my own business this week, and now it is out of my control. I've got to play well."
Sergio Garcia secured his spot on his fifth straight team for Europe with a runner-up finish, while Justin Rose stayed in the mix with a 71 in the final round to tie for ninth.

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Truth be told, they were looking forward to a holiday this week, a visit to a new home they are building in North Carolina that will be their American base, a place where they could truly decompress and celebrate the Open Championship victory from a few weeks ago.
Now they have another trophy to haul around, and Caroline Harrington didn't quite know what to make of it all in the early evening chill at Oakland Hills Country Club.
"It's getting ridiculous," she said laughing, trying to keep track of children Paddy, 4, and Ciaran, 1, accepting unexpected congratulations all while the magnitude of husband Padraig's victory at the PGA Championship was still sinking in. "I'm just in shock. This is unbelievable."
Yes it is.
And no it's not.
Three weeks after playing what many believed to be the back nine of his life to win at Royal Birkdale, an exhausted Padraig Harrington was hoisting the Wanamaker Trophy and becoming the first European-born golfer since 1930 to win the PGA Championship.
That the Irishman did so while basically on fumes is the amazing thing.
Harrington was despondent on Friday after shooting 74, saying, "I'd just run out of steam. I did my best to be ready for the week, but clearly I'm not." On Sunday, he recalled, "I just couldn't get off the golf course fast enough. I was probably the only guy who finished bogey-bogey and thought he was doing pretty well.
"I was probably thinking of putting my clubs away for a week, which is something I almost never do."

Padraig Harrington shot a pair of 66s over the weekend to clinch his third major championship victory.
And yet if we have learned anything about Harrington, 36, it is that he is one of the most resilient players in the game today. He is not as gifted, nor does he possess the same skills as a Tiger Woods or a Phil Mickelson or even a Sergio Garcia, who was the tough-luck loser again on Sunday.
But the man has moxie. And that is why his victory comes as no surprise at all. The man loves it when his back his up against the wall. He shot a 4-under-par 66 to rally from three strokes back with nine holes to play, shooting another 32 on the back nine -- just like at Royal Birkdale -- to win by two strokes over Garcia and Ben Curtis.
"I just finished doing cartwheels," said Harrington's longtime coach, Bob Torrance, 76, when reached after midnight at his Scotland home. "The back nine was unbelievable. He holed some fantastic putts. And you have to do those things to win majors. He has gone well beyond and he is one of the top players in the world. He's just a great, unbelievable pressure player. Under the crush, he is just extremely good."
And that is exactly what Harrington relishes. He has now won three of the last six major championships -- not even Woods can say that, although he's missed the last two due to injury. Harrington undoubtedly took much from his Open victory last year in a playoff over Garcia at Carnoustie, and last month's four-shot win over Ian Poulter at Royal Birkdale.
There was some eeriness in the similarities between Harrington's win at Oakland Hills this week and his triumph in 2007 at Carnoustie.
On both occasions, he came from well back of Garcia and witnessed the Spaniard hit a shot that nearly went into the hole then caromed away after ricocheting off the flagstick.
Harrington also did his best impression of his final round at the seaside links where he made a mess of the 72nd hole. In both situations, despite the missteps, the Irishman ended the day raising a trophy.
"I felt an edge in terms of my experience," Harrington said. "I felt an edge in terms of my ability to take an opportunity when it comes around."
Harrington woke at 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning in order to complete the rain-delayed third round and managed a 4-under-par 66 that included four straight birdies on the back nine. Caroline and the kids didn't bother to show up for the conclusion, knowing how burned out hubby was, figuring it was best to get ready for their vacation.
Even Padraig wasn't in the best of spirits after that 66, having just bogeyed the 18th hole to drop a shot he felt was crucial. He was looking forward to a nap before having to go at the monster that is Oakland Hills again.
"I'm not anywhere where I could be [mentally]," he said. "But who knows? Last round of a major, you don't know, I keep approaching every shot hopeful it will click into place."
It clicked into place several times Sunday, especially on the par-5 12th, where Harrington used the same 5-wood to hit a second shot toward the green that he used in clinching the victory on Royal Birkdale's 17th hole and made an eagle. This time it set up a birdie and the game was on over the last six holes.
Harrington birdied the 13th with a 15-foot putt, but bogeyed the 14th to fall a shot behind Garcia. They both parred No. 15, but when Garcia hit his approach in the water at the 16th, Harrington needed to get up and down from a bunker -- he holed a 20-foot par putt -- to remain tied for the lead.
Perhaps the putt of the tournament came at the par-3 17th, where Garcia had stuffed his approach shot inside of Harrington's shot that he believed was good enough to win him the tournament. Garcia was only 4 feet from the hole, while Harrington was 10 feet away.
"I knew I had the opportunity to get the putt in first," he said. "And that was important. I knew if I holed this, I probably would win the PGA."
He did hole it -- and Garcia missed. And when Harrington was able to coax in a 15-foot for par on the 18th green, it rendered Garcia's par putt meaningless. Unbeknownst to the Harringtons, who nervously sat behind the 18th green, Ben Curtis had bogeyed the 17th hole.
Harrington had won the PGA, becoming the first Irishman to accomplish the feat. He also became only the fourth European to win the title and one of just four players -- Walter Hagen (1924), Nick Price (1994) and Tiger Woods (2000, 2006) -- to win the Open Championship and the PGA Championship in the same year.
Now Harrington finds himself in some rare air. Ranked third in the world behind Woods and Mickelson, he joins only Lefty, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh as active players other than Woods (who has 14) with three major championships.
"I know I love the idea of the back nine of a major on Sunday," Harrington said. "I love it so much that I'm actually disappointed I'm seven months away from the next major. And I don't know what I'm going to do."
Well, Harrington will start by enjoying that long-planned family vacation in North Carolina, where he will look at plans for the new house, play with the kids, start thinking about the FedEx Cup playoffs and the Ryder Cup. Maybe he'll dream about next year's Masters.
And, if so moved, he can celebrate by sipping his favorite beverage out of two trophies rather than one.

Encourage everyone to move quickly enough so you find yourself right behind the group in front several times, both early and late in the round.

Remember the old staples of getting around in good time: Play "ready golf" (hit when ready, even if you aren't away) until you reach the green, be prepared to play when it's your turn on the tee and green, and never search for a lost ball for more than five minutes.

II. Keep your temper under control

In the final of the Western Pennsylvania Junior when I was 17, I let my putter fly over the gallery after missing a short putt. I won the match, but when I got in the car with my parents for the ride home, there were no congratulations, just dead silence. Eventually my father said, "If I ever see you throw a club again, you will never play in another golf tournament." That wake-up call stayed with me. I haven't thrown a club since.

Throwing clubs, sulking and barking profanity make everyone uneasy. We all have our moments of frustration, but the trick is to vent in an inoffensive way. For example, I often follow a bad hole by hitting the next tee shot a little harder -- for better or worse.

III. Respect other people's time

Because time is our most valuable commodity, there are few good reasons for breaking a golf date. Deciding last-minute to clean the garage on Saturday, or getting a call that the auto-repair shop can move up your appointment by a day, just doesn't cut it.

IV. Repair the ground you play on

During one of my last tour events as a player, I noticed another pro making practice swings in my field of vision as I was getting ready to hit a shot. I stopped, walked over and reminded him (maybe too sternly) that it was my turn to play. The point is, stand still from the time a player sets himself until the ball has left the club.

Even with the advent of spikeless shoes, the etiquette rule of never walking in someone's line of play on the putting green is an absolute. The area around the hole in particular is sacred ground. The first thing to note when you walk onto a green is the location of every ball in your group, then steer clear of their lines to the hole.

Know where to stand and when to keep quiet. Position yourself directly across or at a diagonal from a player setting up. Never stand on the line of play, either beyond the hole or directly behind the ball. When a player is about to hit a shot, think of the fairway as a cathedral, the green a library.

VI. Make your golf cart 'invisible'

Carts are very much a part of the modern game. Think about it: They're mentioned on the backs of scorecards, discussed in the Decisions on the Rules of Golf, bags and other items are designed specifically for them, and they're used at most courses. The sheer pervasiveness of them makes cart etiquette vitally important.

Your goal when driving a cart should be to leave no trace you were there. Because we tend to look where we're going and not where we've been, it's easy to damage the turf and not realize it. Avoid wet areas and spots that are getting beaten up from traffic. Golfers tend to play "follow the leader" and drive in single file out to the fairway before branching off. It's usually better to "scatter" -- everyone take a different route -- so cart traffic is spread out.

VII. Always look your best

Nobody knows less about technology than I do. But I know enough to recognize a cell phone when it rings in my backswing. If I had my way, cell phones would be turned off at all times on the course, but most clubs have given in to the fact that people are going to use them. I don't know all the gadgets and settings on those phones, but do whatever you have to do to keep it quiet. And if you absolutely have to make a call, move away from the other players. And keep the call so brief that they don't even know you made it.

IX. Lend a hand when you can

It's easy to help out your fellow players, if you just pay attention. One obvious way is looking for lost balls -- better yet, watching errant shots so they don't turn into lost balls. Pick up that extra club left on the fringe or the headcover dropped next to the tee, and return it to its owner after saying, "Nice shot!" And if you see a cart out of position or a provisional ball that needs picking up, don't just walk by.

X. Learn the little things

There are a hundred bits of etiquette I haven't mentioned, like laying the flagstick down carefully, tamping down spike marks when you're walking off a green, letting faster groups play through, and so on. All of these things are learned by observing, with a sharp eye and a considerate heart. Just know that golf has a way of returning favors, and every piece of etiquette you practice will be repaid tenfold.

Wie shot a second-round 80 in the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open to finish at 9 over par through 36 holes. The cut will be at around even par by the time play ends Friday afternoon. Wie shot an opening-round 73, 1-over par. But a quintuple-bogey nine on the eighth hole (her 17th of the day) ended any hopes of Wie surviving to play the weekend at the par-72 Montreux Golf and Country Club. Parker McLachlin shot a 10-under 62 and leads in the clubhouse at 14 under.

"I really don't know why Michelle continues to do this. We have a major this week and, if you can't qualify for a major, I don't see any reason why you should play with the men."
