Daly Butches Relationship with Butch

By Brian Hewitt The Golf Channel

John Daly’s brief tutelage under the respected eye of teacher Butch Harmon appears to be over.

The pair started working together earlier this year in hopes of restoring the form that helped Daly win two major championships in the '90s. But when Harmon became aware of, among other things, recent published reports that Daly’s problems with alcohol abuse had resurfaced, he became frustrated.

“When I started working with John the understanding was that I would help him with his golf game if he helped himself,” Harmon told GOLF CHANNEL Tuesday. “Quite frankly I don’t see any reason for us to continue going down that road.”

There were eyewitness reports out of California that Daly had to be helped from at least one of the parties he attended in January at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. Then the Tampa Tribune ran a story in its Sunday editions detailing a Daly appearance Saturday at a nearby Hooters Owls Nest during which Daly reportedly consumed multiple beers and autographed the blue-jeaned derriere of one female fan.

Harmon said he hasn’t spoken to Daly in 10 days. And, he added, “I don’t even want to be associated with him now.”

None of this comes as a great surprise. Harmon said from the beginning that any aid he gave Daly would be of the ‘tough love’ variety.

The 41-year-old Daly has played in seven events in 2008, missing three cuts and withdrawing once. His best finish is a T60 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico last month.
