Golf Newbie Video Series Transcripts - How Far Should I Hit Each Club

How far should you hit each club? This depends on each persons physical strength, swing and natural ability. As a general guide, for a dude, if you can hit your 7 iron about 150 yards you’re doing ok. Each club will then be approximately 10-15 yards apart, so your 6 iron will go about 160, 5 iron 170 and so on. The average driver distance is about 220 yards so if you hit more than that you’re also doing ok. One of the problems associated with this question is most guys like to think they can hit it further than they can. They hit a 7 iron 180 yards from an elevated tee, downhill, downwind and they think this is their average distance. If you want proof, just watch your playing partners the next time you’re out playing and I would bet you anything that at least 75% of the time golfers come up short of their target. There is no right or wrong about how far you hit each club, and just remember there’s no place on the scorecard to put what club you used to get it in the hole.
