How to deal with a cheater on the golf course
Accusing someone of cheating on the course is maybe the most serious accusation you can make and if you are going to confront someone then you better be 100% sure you saw them in the act.
Who is doing the cheating really dictates how you should deal with a cheater. If you are playing in any kind of tournament you need to deal with it at the time of cheating, and then take it up with tournament officials.
If you’re playing casually, and you don’t know the person then we say leave it alone and let the golf gods deal with them in their own way. The problem arises when one of your regular playing partners is a cheater. There are two ways to handle it.
You confront the cheater head-on in front of the rest of your mates and when you witness him in the act, or you can pull him aside after and have a quiet word to him, simply saying that if he does it again, you are not going to play with him. The other thing is to try to make light of it and simply suggest something like for example, if he moves his ball to give himself a preferred lie, you might make a comment at the end of the round that makes it clear that you don’t tolerate that kind of shit. Something like “I had a terrible lie on the 5th hole, was thinking about moving it while you guys weren’t looking but lucky golf is game of honesty yeah?” This will tell them you’re not happy and that you expect everybody to play with the rules. If they still continue to cheat then you might want to get yourself a new playing partner or simply lay it on the line and say “look mate, we all know you cheat, we don’t like it, if you keep doing it were not playing with you again”. It’s a tough call, but if they cheat on the golf course the chances are they cheat at something else in life and are not worthy of being your mate anyway.
Whatever you decide, you need to be absolutely sure they are in fact cheating. Another thing to be aware of is some newer players may not be in fact aware of the rules and may not know what they are doing is cheating. That form of cheating is somewhat acceptable, or at least should be forgiven depending on the intent.
Golf is a game of honesty and no matter why you play the game you should always respect the rules.
